Def Fluid pumps

Has any tried filling Def fluid from the pumps as the diesel truck stops? I drove upto one and and the nozzle is the larger ones and I am pretty sure dont fit into the Def fluid port on the Tahoe.

Do they make adapters?

Disregard: I did not notice that the Def fluid nozzle was in a separate covered compartment at the pump.

Just FYI. My dealer specifically mentioned they did not recommend using the DEF pumped at truck stops. Not sure if the OTR tractors use a different formula or what but they recommended only use individual jugs from a recognized brand.

There is no actual difference in DEF from dispenser or jugs, but it is usually only sold in the big rig lines, and it isn't worth the tension of pulling in there, paying in advance usually, and having potential issues. You can buy Wal mart DEF economically, its always fresh, and can be done at a time and place of your choosing, and the jug is a perfect waste oil collector...

I am growing to appreciate the wisdom of this DEF system. I don't mind the smell of diesel but other people would, like my wife, kids and the neighbors. The DEF system almost completely eliminates the diesel smell. Together with the excellent sound damping, people don't notice this is a diesel. Knowing the DEF like I do now, I would probably choose to have it if it were optional.

I only use DEF from bulk at truck stops on both of my diesels that require it-no problems in either the suburban (23K miles) or 2013 Cummins (120K) miles.

old thread but DEF is DEF, however, DEF at Truckstop stays in the ground and stays cooler. DEF goes bad when exposed to heat. can go bad in a matter of days if you keep it in the sun. shelf life at 104F is 60 days.

Keep your DEF filled up. if you run it down to the bottom you’re asking for trouble.

I have a 5 gallon jug I fill up at truck stop and keep in basement. not to go treehugger style here but DEF is suppose to save the enviroment yes? , yet people buy millions of plastic DEF cans (only 9% of plastic going into recycle bins actually gets recycled) that along with all the emissions crap that fails and ends up in landfills along the way, another EPA win win

Not true at all. DEF at Wal mart stays in the ac till it is sold which is everyday there, plus it is exposed to daily heat as soon as you put it into your vehicle. Doesn't go bad in "days". I have 2 Diesel vehicles in SW FL. Some have had the same DEF in them for a year @ 90 deg daily. No issues.
Keep your DEF filled up? Full is not better unless you are going thru it rapidly. Increases the chances of having old fluid if you are not towing. wait till you get the 1st warning and then dump in 2.5 and go for another 10K miles. Keeps the majority of your tank the freshest possible. I reuse my DEF containers as waste oil containers and the disposal site recycles them right along with my oil.

If temp has no effect on DEF why would def manufacturers post it (or walmart keep it in AC?)

Certainly has an effect on it, it will need much more fluid to get the same result. but if DEF sits in your vehicle that long be prepared for a big bill one of these days.

Lots of diesels further north, the DEF heating elements crud up if they’re exposed. hence fuller is better.
