Sierra/Yukon/XL

I know it’s prob been asked 100 times but I can’t search for it
I always wanted to buy a pick up truck, I don’t tow anything and I don’t do construction work but deff comes in handy only once in a while. Also am looking at a Yukon or Yukon XL. Never had a pick up truck before. Can’t make up my mind. I know a lot guys complain water gets into the bed when having a cover on but I know it will come in handy sometimes. I have 2 kids and I’m a firefighter. Most guys I work with have trucks but never really thought about maybe buying one until now. Whatever I decide I will keep this for a long time.
Opinions?

Sorry, is the XL to big to drive or is it worth the extra 15 inches in length over the yukon
(I think the 2022 model is a 15 inch difference in length)

I’ve been driving Tahoes, Suburbans, and now a Yukon XL since ‘96. I love the versatility. You can haul stuff, people, or both. Your kids will soon be wanting to bring friends along. 6 people in a pickup is a no go…at least for any distance. You can road trip in a Suburban or Yukon XL with 6 people and all their gear. 4x8 sheet goods still fit in a Suburban/XL. I fit my kid’s entire dorm room supplies in a suburban along with wife and the kid. And, if you have dirty/messy stuff to haul, rent or borrow a trailer. Pickup great for work, but the SUV is king for people hauling.

XL basically same length as a pickup, so if you are considering a truck, I recommend the XL. The $$ difference between the XL and regular is nominal, the cargo space is massive difference. Unless you’re in a major metro area w/ small parking spaces, for me it’s XL or bust.

IMO, the only thing that the pickup is better at with regards to hauling are tall objects (too tall to get into a Yukon XL). I had a Yukon, and now I have a Yukon XL, and the difference in available and usable space is huge.

Since you are a firefighter, how much equipment are you hauling around, and how frequently ? Is there anything that is too big that you need to move around that you can't do with your current vehicle?

I do haul all my gear which is some what a lot.. plus a couple travel bags with extra uniforms ect.. I keep it in a huge zippered hockey bag when I have to work at other stations and it would be nice to keep it in the bed of a truck instead of inside with the kids even though it is zippered but still

Tall objects and stuff you don’t want in the interior like dirt, rocks, stinky stuff etc. IMO the best is a PU with a shell on the back. I have more kids than you so a third row is nice.

I have a new Silverado and very little water gets inside under my tonneau unless your directly power washing it, if it’s just raining outside then it’s not going to get wet under there. Have a new Tahoe too and we love it, it’s the kid hauler and grocery getter. If we need lumber or mulch or whatever then it’s the truck for sure. How many kids do u have? If 3+ I would do the Yukon xl, just 2 then truck or Yukon
