Pic worth 1000 words, going to dealer tomorrow, doesn't bode well. Will post back w/ the diagnosis from the dealer. Was hoping to not get to know their service guys too well :(

That sucks. That's kinda the problem with digital instrument clusters and they are bound to fail. Had an all digital on my 2017 Grand Cherokee and cluster reset the oil life and a few other things. Hope it gets work out for you but may happen again down the road.

Odd thing is it seems to work fine, dismissing the message and it works great. But, could be some issue w/ communication or something. Even the "analog" clusters are "digital" these days, just a stepper motor actuating the needles based on computer input...at least the LCD screen can't have stepper motors fail...

I view it as a positive it failed early. Only thing that worries me is someone having to disassemble the dash to replace/repair it...but maybe it isn't too bad. Guess it's time to find out if this dealer is any good at service.

Word from the dealer is that the history code stored which caused this message is on a long list of DTC's that GM has a bulletin on. Code points to "Algorithm based error." Fundamentally means there is a firmware bug. Do nothing for now, GM working on a software fix. Gotta love technology.

I hate it. I’ve been around software development for a while now and like everything it has gone to a big steaming pile of crap. It used to be about writing quality, bullet-proof code, regardless of whether it was mission critical or not.

Nowadays the thinking has changed completely: ”Is the bug gonna kill someone? No? OK, just ship it and we’ll patch it later.”

Boeing says “hi”. [slightly different, but you get the idea]

Same, I am in the tech business too, in quality...its the bane of my existence, daily! Also the reason I will never let a vehicle drive for me...

If any good came out of the Max crashes it’s the hope that manufacturers like GM know they can’t screw around when it comes to software that deals with safety. That’s why any Super Duper Mega Awesome Cruise must be bullet-proof, or at least as it is now where it beeps at you if you fall asleep at the wheel. That does feel a bit more CYA than anything, though.

I think we’ll eventually get there - after all, we fly on commercial planes where pilots hit the autopilot button literally seconds after calling, “Gear Up”.

Remember when you bought a Nintendo game, stuck it in the console and the game was bug free? The few bugs a game did have were like easter eggs and sometimes you wondered if they were intentionally wrote into the code. My days of gaming are long past me, but now with my kids getting older we're starting to play some games on my old consoles and PC. I've heard a lot of games are released nowadays that barely work and need patch after patch just to "work." Sure, there's a lot more "content" to games these days, but I absolutely believe there's a level of laziness in software development that was created by the ability to issue patches so easily.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. The Internet and over-the-air updates has been a major catalyst in lazy programming becoming rampant. Your gaming reference is 100% spot on (I used to work at a AAA publisher): you buy the game, pop in the disc, and what’s the first thing that happens? “Downloading updates …”. It still happens with digital downloads: you fire up the game and the first thing it does is update, right after downloading the game!

The same thing is true with cars nowadays - look at all the people with random issues with the RSE … one day it just shows HDMI inputs, the next day it shows Hulu, the next day the HDMI inputs again …

Hi all, an update. This weekend took a road trip which put about 400 miles of windshield time on the truck. Had 3 cases of "glitches" in the infotainment/instrument cluster...ususally resulted in a new station being selected on the radio, a jump to a different screen in the instrument cluster, and a blackout of the audio for about 15 seconds....anyone else seen anything like this. Tried various pushes and touches of the steering wheel controls, thinking maybe I bumped them, but nothing resulted in the same symptoms. Unsure if related to my original post or something different. E-mailed the dealer today...asked them to check for bulletins and get back to me. Gremlins.
