We paid $6k over msrp last august for a ‘21 Yukon and that doesn’t bother me the slightest bit as we were able to drive said overpriced Yukon home the same day. Had been looking for a suburban in stock for weeks and just by dumb luck stumbled across this xl in the color we wanted with the engine we wanted and nearly every option we wanted.

You should be in FL where admin fees are routinely 1-2k and you don’t get Anything for that, along with additional dealer markups…and practically every dealer is the same. Cheaper to go out of state!

We are paying msrp but most other dealers I talked to are marking up at least $5,000. Those marking up have been a lost more generous with the trade at least for the few I talked too.

I saw the same regarding trade in the Charlotte, NC area. My dealer offered low end, dealers marking up offered more.

I listed our vehicle on FB marketplace and got bombarded with messages from local dealers. Ended up selling it to a large local used car dealer for $2k more than what our dealer offered including the tax advantage. They sent 2 guys to my house, quick inspection, handed a check and off it went. Deal done, car gone within 48 hours of listing. 10/10 would recommend to anyone considering a trade.

The hard part of this and how they get you, dammit...
The dealer you're (well, I'm) buying from has you, and they know it.

Example:
Buying a $75k Tahoe
Local/State Tax here 7%

Dealer A that you're buying from offers you $50k trade, making you responsible for the $25k Difference and taxes on the it: $25k + $1750 Tax

Dealer B would need to give you $53.5 or more for the same trade as you'll now be responsible for the Sales Tax for the entire Tahoe: $75k + $5250 Tax

I know what I'm trying say, hope this makes sense...

I'm in South Florida and bought out of state (Hubler Shelbyville, Indiana) at MSRP, $225 dealer and title fee, less a $1,000 Costco incentive, and shipped the vehicle down in an enclosed trailer. With all the recent reports of new constraints, I feel extremely lucky to have found our RST on the lot with everything we wanted.

The only local dealership I found not charging over MSRP was Autonation Chevy, which was thanks to a tip here (I believe from Jtpmedic, if I remember correctly). I would have ordered one from them, but a few of the options we wanted in our build were on constraint by the time I wanted to order.

So I then started searching Chevy's website for inventory as far away as I could search (2000 miles). Found maybe 5 that fit our criteria and got lucky when Hubler had one on the lot, and was not overcharging on MSRP or dealer fees so we quickly decided to pull the trigger and ship it.

But yes, bottom line, MSRP seems like a deal these days. I'd say 95% of the dealers I contacted were either charging over MSRP, large dealer/doc fees, or required add-ons, or a combination of these.

The local sales tax rate in FL only applies to, I think, the first $5,000 of the purchase price. So that extra 1% caps at $50 in sales tax. Otherwise, only the state 6% tax applies. Also, it's the net trade in value that you save the sales tax on. If there is a loan to pay off, that is subtracted from the trade in value before the sales tax savings. So if you have $50k trade, and a $40k loan to payoff, you have a $10k deduction in the taxable value of the vehicle, saving only about $600 (6%) in sales tax. Just pointing this out because it affects the calculations on which ends up being better-- trading to dealer you are buying from, or selling at a higher price elsewhere.

In general that’s correct…of course the exceptions are the ones that everybody always brings up, so then it’s just making sure the buyer is knowledgeable about the vehicle sales tax laws in their state.

Ordered a Ram dually and after reading through some of those forums, it’s surprising how vastly different everyone’s situation is…apparently SC vehicle sales tax is capped at $500…AR allows a credit to be applied against the sales tax owed using a vehicle sold privately (not traded in).

Ordered my '22 Tahoe RST about a month ago, at MSRP (plus a few hundred in dealer adds, tint, etc) minus any GM incentives that are in place when it finally arrives
