Cousin gave me a 99 Yukon.

At night, with headlights switch adjusted to 'on', either the inner or outer headlights are on. (don't remember which) Then, when I pull back on the turn signal switch to go to high beams I suddenly can't see the road, but I can see some dim lights left and right of my view. What am I doing wrong, or are there no high beams on this model of vehicle? If it's a problem with the vehicle, how many headlights of the 4 total should illuminate when I turn on high beams? I doubt 2 lights burned out at once, so there must be something major wrong I presume.

Any help much appreciated.

Typically, when you turn your high beams on, the fog lights turn off, so with fog lights switched on, you will still have only 4 lights lit max at any one time.

Location
Stockton, Ca.
like suggested either park in front of a window or get a helper
check your fuses
it's possible both lights could be out 1 could have been out for a while and never even noticed until the other goes out.
pull the bulbs and harness and check with a meter to confirm
clean the bulb harness with a flathead screwdriver or piece of sandpaper

On the Old Body Style Yukons, with composite headlights, the outboard lamps are illuminated with the headlights switch on. (Also illuminated with daytime running light function, if parking brake is released)

Pull back the multifunction switch, to turn on high beams. Inner lamps will illuminate, outboard lamps will extinguish. I have heard of some guys installing a relay, that allows headlamps to stay on when high beams are selected, essentially giving you 4 lamps on at the same time.

As Yukon GTmaster stated the low beams go off when the high beams come on, dumb system but easily modified. I just use a Bosch style relay mounted inside the left fender near the underhood fuse box. Wire it to turn the low beams on with the high beams. Also if either the high or low beams are dim use a voltmeter and check voltage at the plug for the headlamp and check to be sure the ground is good.
