If you have been keeping track with me, the current work will include a new GM Genuine part steering wheel position sensor. I was just replacing because I knew it would go bad eventually, like doing the knock sensors..

Recently I have noticed a strange feeling when doing 55 mph thru my 35 mph cloverleaf near where I live. I did the Hellwig front and rear bar kits and when first going thru the cloverleaf I experienced no unusual sensation at all, except for how well it handled with the new bars. Recently, and getting slightly worse, I noticed that while steering thru the cloverleaf there is a back and forth slight pushback in the steering wheel and a kind of rattling/grinding noise coming from under the dash. There is no problems during normal driving and lane switch or regular turns and corners. I never got the feeling I could not control the steering or that the steering had a mind of it's own. I am going after work to the shop and replace that sensor tonight. Will not get a chance for a road test till rest of front end is completely together and the alignment is done. I should have back tomorrow night. Wish the shop was here but I cannot look a gift horse in the mouth. He lets me supply all parts and only charges me for lift use and if he helps or does any work all by himself. If I ever need a heater core, he will do the work ALL BY HIMSELF!

He is motivated because he really feels he is getting this Tahoe eventually and wants to be involved with the work as it goes along.

What's the purpose and location of the steering wheel sensor? How do you know if it's bad?

@Tonyrodz, I had no idea about that sensor till I joined here. I never saw them in my shops for that work. Location is on the steering column under the dash. Feels bad, I learned here, from the pulsing steering and it makes a noise.

I linked the definition because I was afraid I did not know enough about it to be accurate.

The sensor tells the computer what the truck is doing, so it can apply traction control appropriately. Is it turning, sliding, skidding, etc. If it’s bad, the traction control and stabilitrack stay offline.

It’s bad in thecopcar. I tried a trick with a new sensor plugged in but not installed on the steering shaft. Works okay for 5 miles, then knows it should have had some input by then. Stabilitrack goes offline again. Traction control seems to stay on.

Thanks for the link, and description. Sounds like this is only relevant to Stabilitrak-equipped vehicles.

Ok, now I am really gonna show what I am not familiar with. My friend and his partner have done tunes many times and still do for the right rig. They want to be involved with mine. Short of me going to Idaho or scheduling an appt. at at remote location, can I buy what I need for my rig from BBP? My friend has the scanner and editor on his laptop and they have the capability of working with MPVI II Interface for HP Tuner. To me, what I just shared makes no sense because I never had a shop that did that.

Can one of you please answer back here with what is needed and what I need to get from BBP?

You buy credits from HP tuners to edit your truck. It is fairly simple, if they tune they will know exactly what you need to buy. I am in midfle of tuning my truck.

Ok, thanks. I will get with him and see. He was curious if when they did a tune, do they use a dyno or just road test monitoring? Forgot to ask that in my OP. Sorry.

They can tune lots of things but for fuel tuning (speed density / volumetric efficency, and mass air flow) you really need to read a wideband 02 sensor... They can screw that into factory o2 bung closest driver side exhaust manifold. then disable all the adaptive / closed loop fueling, collect data and calibrate the fuel. Then re-enable closed loop.

If interested to learn more google goat rope garage. He does tutorials on CK trucks with HP tuners.
