If this post isn’t in its proper place, I apologize. I started experiencing a very intimidating sound from under the hood a couple days ago on my way home from work. So I parked my ‘hoe and there’s she’s sat until now that I have a chance to “dig in”. Lol
The noise in question is best describes as a “clacking” sound, only a fast and repeated sound. My initial thought was that one of the deflectors in the air box was kinda flapping back and forth. It was not a steady thing. It was kinda random and short bursts, and I could not seem to do anything to either cause it or to disrupt it when it was happening. Once I got home and parked it started again. Upon opening the hood then sliding up under the front end the noise definitely seemed to be coming from the front of the motor where all the pulleys are. So now I’m thinking I have bearings going out somewhere up there. I know enough to remove the belt(s) and to look for obvious belt wear and/or any play in the pulleys. Any similar experiences or pointers would be greatly appreciated as I am not even a “shade tree” level mechanic.
This may not be related but I feel like I should mention a couple of other things that have had me suspect of a bigger problem.
A. A couple months ago I noticed the passenger side floor boards were soaked (front and rear). No noticeable leaks anywhere inside or out. No water loss in the reservoir. And none of that obvious odor that comes with heater core leaks. I cleared out any leaves or debris that I could find along the perimeter of the engine bay but there sure didn’t seem like enough to cause a problem. The floors have since dried and I’ve not noticed them being even slightly damp since.
B. My low coolant message has started appearing on the dash occasionally. It is not all the time, just now and then. Once again, there is no signs of leaking anywhere under the truck and my reservoir level checks out just fine. I should also point out that thru all of this the truck does not run hot at all. I drive about an hour one way to work and sit in the vehicle for upwards of 30 minutes with the engine running almost daily. The temp gauge always rises consistently and then levels off just below the 210 mark. No signs or smells indicating any overheating or coolant leaks. And the heater works just fine.
I am cautiously optimistic about all of this, but that new noise from under the hood is quite unsettling. I apologize for the novel, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible. Anyone who may have any suggestions or pointers, please have at it... and thanks in advance.
