I just bought an 05 Tahoe Z71 and didn't even climb up on the rails to check the roof condition. Well when I did I saw what I dreaded, peeling paint. It's not a wide section but length wise it runs most of the roof from the sunroof back. I went by and got my first quote today and they want $1100 to redo the whole roof. I thought they could just repaint the damaged area. I'm going to get a few more quotes before I make up my mind what to do next. Anybody have any experience with only repainting the affected area? d8f9920123b7d12c62158fae2023b73b.jpg

If you don't care about looks, and you only care about protecting the metal then yes, only the bad spots can be repaired/repainted. They're likely quoting the whole roof because the vast majority of customers want good looks.

It's hard to blend paint in the middle of a body panel and make it look right. My brother had it done to a couple doors. The blend is actually under the door trim but at the back of the rear doors on his Yukon Denali where the trim ends you can see the difference.

Next shop you go to ask them if they can just “peak it” at the top of the body line and blend into the rest of the roof. They can do it, but without clear wrapping the entire roof I doubt they will give you a lifetime warranty.

But it’s doable.

Curious what you ended up doing. My 2006 Yukon is losing paint like yours on top, as well as the left rear quarter panel.

cheap primer with paint brush, and maybe even cheap house paint on top, it's the roof no one cares and not worth $ to do 'properly.'

If it is failing in one spot it is likely going to fail in more shortly after. Not only is a spot fix a horrible way to fix anything but no body shop is going to do a spot fix on that because they will be married to it forever. That will have to be sanded down to bare metal for there to be any chance of the repair being good. $1100 is very reasonable. I was quoted $2000 to repaint the hood and roof of a Yukon I was considering buying and they wouldn't offer any warranty either.

You could also sand it down and then get a vinyl wrap on the roof. Might be cheaper.

Alternative option, fix rust then have the top line-xed. Comes in colors, gives some heat and sound insulation.
