So this morning I finished my first oil change since owning my yukon.. I’ve read from different sites. 8.5 qts. Another said 8. But today after draining oil and filter. I topped off at about 9 qts before the dip stick read full ( when I say full I mean the middle of the full and low line)

Does this sound right or did I over fill?

In looking at the manual for your vehicle, it says 8.5qts with filter, but at the bottom of the chart it says the capacities are approximate so I think you should be ok. I'd just watch it.

Appreciate it. Im sure half a quart wouldn’t damage the engine anyway. Was wondering if anyone else experienced the same when doing their oil changes. Ive had 3 other GM trucks that used to only take 6 qts. So this was a surprise to me

They've increased the oil capacity so that the thinner oils will last longer.

So what’s the length on these oil changes now? I do my van every 3-3500 miles and used to do my 00 Tahoe the same. I read somewhere these newer trucks are good for 15k between changes?

The K2s are still the same as the older ones, if not a little less, 7500 tops now. Not sure about the T1s but if those L84, L87 DFM motors are running even thinner oil, you can bet they'll have the same OCI with a larger capacity to get the oil there.

Never heard that these 2015+Tahoe's or Yukon's can go 15K miles between oil changes. That would keep me up at night. I stick to 5K mile changes and use either AC Delco or Mobil 1. I use zero oil between changes and use only 0w20.

I read the chart wrong. Gmc does recommend every 7500. But even so. I agree with about 5k max

I do every 5-6k miles. I don’t think it’s the oil but more the filter holding capacity for contaminants. I am just speaking for AC Delco filter. Never had an issue with OEM filters.

The dealer claims GM lowered it to 5K miles but did not see anything about it. I think the dealers just did it on their own.

Some owners were probably pushing their oil till 8500 or more. I did come across someone with a 2017 5.3 Silverado at a gas station last year who still had the factory oil in it at 12K miles. I told him to change it out by the end of the day.

With Direct Injection it is crazy to push the oil much further then 5K miles.
