I did it in my 2002 GMC Sierra. I had the short one with the pocket in it and changed it to the longer one with the sun glasses tray. Had to cut the headliner, but the spot to mount it in the roof was there. Not sure if the Tahoe would be the same or not. I used my Milwaukee inspection camera to look under the headliner to make sure the mount was there before I cut any holes.

But what about the hvac controls for the rear? Will that still work?
For the consoles without HVAC controls, it is a simple piece of plastic. I would assume the HVAC controls could be transplanted. I can get you a picture of a shorty console, backside, if you want to see (No HAVAC controls). I bought one because it was cheap I need to fix the passenger side map light in my 2004 Silverado.

The ones wo the hvac controls were from pickups.

My point was that the cubby could be removed from the consoles WITHOUT HVAC controls, and the HVAC controls from the original console could be transplanted (theoretically). From the truck console I have and the pictures on eBay, I know it is theoretically possible. But I don't know if it is practical or not (as in, will the transplanted HVAC controls stay put?).
