Painting interior panels - problem

Curious as to why you did the clear since the OEM finish doesn’t have any. I’ve used the SEM Classic Coat without clear and it matched perfectly. Do you have pics? Here’s my dash in my 02 with SEM which is a perfect match and the interior in my 08 Silverado which has some original oem (dash) and some pieces done with Krylon Fusion flat black which I found is an exact match for GM’s Ebony because the SEM that’s supposed to match doesn’t.

Just used the clear for an extra protection it seemed like the sem alone was kind of fragile and easy to scratch I'll take some pic's It's at the shop now getting new dark gray carpet and Black leather seat covers

Your right about the matching though I got med dark pewter at first and it was really light so reordered and got very dark pewter after all that my Upolstery guy says He can cover it in leather which I'm thinking about doing

If you do just make sure to treat the leather regularly. It'll shrink and eventually crack from behind directly in the sun and heat.

It’s not going to match if you add clear, that changes the appearance.

I painted my seat trim pieces with SEM and they were chipping after a year. I sanded and cleaned properly but I didn’t use adhesion promoter or even primer.
I recently just sprayed them with plastidip.


But.... I did paint my dash trim. Sanded and cleaned but the plastic wouldn't take the adhesion promoter. So I re-sanded and I just used primer filler and that stuck. Then base and 2K clear

It needs wet sanding but so far it seems to be holding up after a few weeks. I’ve even removed the trim a few times since. But it’s really not in an area that gets touched a lot either. I’ve heard just as much fail stories as I’ve had success stories about painting these 99-07 GM plastic pieces. Not sure if certain years or certain base colors has anything to do with it. My buddy was sanding a dash trim piece and the finish was coming off like some kind of a rubber coating.

Yes, the dash pieces all have this rubbery paint coating. I ended up buying one of those black dash caps and a dash bezel from a 2500HD that was already black plastic. I covered the lower dash kick panel and glovebox with white vinyl pleather. Im putting everything back together and will have pics soon

It’s weird cause none of mine is rubbery. It’s just painted plastic

I would trade with you in a hot second. This rubbery stuff buckles if you use *anything* on it like adhesion promoter, or paint prep grease remover. Have to sand it off

That is weird, because I’ve done my dash in my 02 and 2 dashes for my 08 and never seen any “rubbery stuff”. The texture is part of the mold, it’s not added on top. I have used denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner with scotchbrite pads and never touched the texture. Maybe yours had been sanded down before and then they added texture out of a can. It’s the only thing I can think of.
