I searched and didn’t find much on this, but I have an 04 Tahoe AWD and the rear differential is going to need to be rebuilt soon, had anyone added a air locker or selectable locker to an AWD vehicle before for added help in snow season or certain Offroad situations? How does that work with the AWD setup?

thank you in advance

I don't have one but I know @randeez has a factory G80 locker in his AWD yukon. It really depends on what you want to do with it and what your eventual goals are with the truck. If you just want to drive it and have better snow traction a locker would be better than a POSI unit however Truetracs are pretty much bullet proof.

I’m not looking to build a wheeler at all, just something to help in the winter or if I’m up in the mountains messing around some, I have 33s on it and sometimes if I get flexed just right or in the right situation the open diffs really hurt it, I’m wondering if having AWD kills the option for a rear locker

From what I know about the AWD system it should not effect having a locker. You have a 10bolt rear end which is extremely common and they came with factory lockers in many trucks. Dare I say a G80 factory locker might actually be a viable option for you. Since the AWD system will lesson the load on the rear I think the G80 would probably survive much longer than in a 2wd street performance application. Also the G80 will fully lock so if you have a wheel lifted it will still send power to the other even in reverse which some Posi units like a truetrac will not do. There are other locker options but a G80 can often be found very cheap compared to other options. If you plan to add a considerable amount of power to the equation with boost or a healthy 6.0 I would steer clear of the G80 but a simple 5.3 with bolt ons shouldn't stress it much.

But I'm not AWD expert see what other guys say.
