So I have this friggin' annoying clunk going into gear, switching from D to R, etc. Also a sort of rub/grind sort of noise in 4WD. Took a video of my exploits under the vehicle and want your thoughts.

IS THIS NORMAL?

Sounds like wear and tear play in the gears/chain. The other squeak/squeal noise is likely a u-joint starting to bind and go bad. You did not say miles on the rig.

We recommend that you put all your rig(s) info in your signature so we all don’t have to guess at year, make, model, engine size, trans, rear axle locker…….etc. Makes it way easier on all members that attempt to help, to have that info right up front. It is also recommended that you take a pic of your RPO codes, on the inside cover of the glove box, and post that image in your signature. All this info will greatly help those that will try to help with a problem.

If there is any other info, like upgrades, mods or recent mechanical/maintenance work done, that would be helpful in any post as well. Too many times a question is asked by the poster and after about 10 responses we find out that the poster has done recent work to attempt to fix the problem or work that was done that SEEMS not related to the problem.

There's a common problem with those transfer cases called pump rub, where a metal tab gets hit and wears a hole in the case. If you get too much more play in that one axle shaft, the C-Clip is going to drop out. I cannot point to anything specific other than seeing the play and suggest that it's time for a new TC and Rear Differential.

How many miles on the ole girl Nick?

Your RPO codes for the 3.73 gears would be GT4 and the locker is G80. Mine is the same. Does yours have barn doors like mine? I personally love the gear set and the barn doors.

I don't have barn doors. I prefer the tailgate.

I've looked at a few NP246 rebuild videos. I can probably handle that myself, assuming the clutches aren't toast. Considering the car's been in 2WD mode for probably 180K of the 192K it has, hopefully they're fine.
