Tried searching the forums, kept getting "no results". not sure if the search is messed up, figured this had been talked about.

Picking up a set of take-off wheels tomorrow and curious what is a good lock to match the factory lugs. Seen a few online that are about 1/4" longer than factory that "fit" the tahoe but the set that is slightly smalller from McGard matches everything but says not compatible. thread count and conical seat seem correct.

How about the GM lock set? Thanks

You'll need to buy the lock that's slightly longer than the lug nuts. The reason is that you need the lock to accommodate the full depth of the lug PLUS the depth of the "puzzle key". No way around it.

Are you sure you want locks? I thought I’d never lose the key too

I got a set of American Racing wheels for my ‘07 that came with special lug nuts that came with a special splined socket. Had to keep it in the glove box in case we got a flat tire and hope we didn’t lose it.

I wrestled with whether or not to purchase wheel locks for my truck. I consulted with a lot of folks in various industries supporting trucks and their maintenance, as well as law enforcement. The overwhelming majority, in fact almost unanimous opinion, was that thieves who typically steal wheels already have 99% of the wheel lock keys in their possession, and those who don't have other tools to force/power off the wheel locks.

As such, I did not purchase wheel locks for my truck.

Ended up getting the wheels installed and they provided a full set of security lugs. Nothing crazy, but will do for now.

Yoy always wanna make sure when purchasing wheel locks, you make sure you register them under your name. Our GM wheel locks are from mcguard sold under a GM# these all come with a registration card, fill out send it in and if you would ever lose/damage the key or lock they will sell you a replacement key/lock. a lote of customers never do that and have to get them removed and purchase new ones or replace with factory nuts.

My post came from experience. Took me 5 years to lose the key. When I got new tpms my tire guy said I needed to get rid of the keys. Sure as heck when I lost it I had to go to him to remove those lugs.
