Uh, agree...... I am adding to the conversation about the fuel........

When it comes to the specifics, I am certainly not the most intelligent person in the room.

But please answer me this...... My '05 Yukon 5.3..... It runs fine with regular gas....( mostly driven around town )
SHOULD I still run a higher grade for longevity ??
Higher octane? Only if it has a custom tune made for higher octane. Otherwise, it was made to run from GM for its lifetime on regular 87 octane

With a stock tune that 5.3 will run better with 93, better mileage, slightly more power, might run a little cooler, idle better, etc. The engine will certainly last longer all else being equal if you run it on Top-Tier fuels though.

And you may not be the most smarterest guy in this here room, but I bet you've forgotten more than most of us will ever know about racing cars and race car engines Peter!

Send me an email and I'll send you my little excel spreadsheet calculator for figuring it out. It's not perfect but gets real close. Meaning, there is not a linear difference between the alcohol content of ethanol and its effective R+M octane rating. E85 at 70% will have a different octane rating than E85 at 75 or 80 percent for example.

My low fuel light came on today. In the pic, my fuel used was 23.9 gal. When I filled up about 2 miles later, the pump said it took 24.7 gal.

So my light comes on when there's about 7 gals left. b41589c26b9f529b49dc2107e498a35f.jpg

Interesting. And you burned the difference in remote starts. My light came on the other night about a 1/2 mile away from the station, took on 26.23 gallons. Sometimes she'll fill into the high 25s right after the light. Either way, this leaves us a nice reserve if we compute for 26 gallons between refuelings while travelling.

Doh! I keep forgetting to take into account for remote starts, even when calculating my mpg. I remote start just about every time I get in it if the temp is cooler than 50 degrees out and it's been sitting for a few hours.

Usually the fuel used on the DIC is pretty accurate, within a half gallon.

Yeah, even with an average mpg of 13.5, I can still go about 80-100 miles before running out after the light comes on.

On another note, the last 4-5 fill ups have been with 93 octane due to the price being in the $2.35-2.55/gal. I do notice a little less performance/throttle response than when running E85. The other day when merging onto the highway I got on it a bit (about 90% throttle) and I heard some spark knock. I wasn't expecting it, since there was 93 in there. Maybe just a bad tank full. Who knows. I may go back to mixing at next fill up.

You guys have much better prices on fuel than we have! E85 is about thirty cents more than January of last year and its only recently come down.

Just filled up our Yukon with E85 tonight at $1.90/gal.

And just for James, I left the motor running tonight.

most cases you can run what the book calls for. if it says prem recommended but can run reg-prem octane just means that if you are forced to get fuel that is less than prem it will run and be ok. the pcm will sense the knock and retard the timing. less power and probably less mpg, but you can make it, I just wouldn't beat on it.

How would this compare to the 19 gal of e85 and 7 of 87? I'm starting my second tank today, I saved about $21 vs filling up with 93!
