Brake by wire!?!?!?

No thank you.

Drive by wire is one thing but brake by wire would be a no go for me.

Everything is going that way. Drive by wire was the hardest for most drivers (who enjoy performance driving) to adjust to. BMW spent over 10 years trying to perfect “steering feel” and some would stay it still does not provide accurate feedback needed to take turns at the limit of speed and turning radius.

That said, I don’t think braking requires “feeling” the texture of the pavement being braked on. So I can only assume you’re referring to a potential safety issue with computers taking over braking. To that I would say, the software for these systems is not like business software we all work with, drive/flight software is considered “real time” software and is tested and tested and improved and improved. But yes, I get it, software failures caused the downing of the 737 Max. But if you compare legacy braking system failures with computer controlled ones, I bet the computer controlled are safer and more consistent.

If memory serves, the F-16 was our first fly-by-wire aircraft and that thing was developed in the 1970s.

Lane keeping and automatic braking, we'll soon be driven around by our all electric automobiles. With that much automation, I might want to go out an buy an old Mustang or Skylark or Jeep with a 4-speed manual or maybe run a horse and wagon again. Miss working a team of horses and mules!

Cadillac says they’ll be all electric by the end of the decade so I’d guess the next model will be the last ICE

I know the benefits of IRS and accept I'm probably just being reactive and irrational, but I just don't like it. Yeah I have a IFS. The solid axle rear and body on frame toughness makes up for it.

Those arms hanging low. Gross. Reminds me of a Honda CR-V

I used to work for a company that put dash cameras in our tractor trailers. The cameras had one facing forward and one facing the driver. I was ok with that because I wasn't doing anything I wasn't supposed to be and it could have potentially been beneficial if there was ever an accident.

They decided to install a system on some of the tractors that would sound an alarm if you started to change lanes without a turn signal on (lane departure) and it would sound an alarm if you were to close behind another vehicle. It would also apply the brakes if it sensed an object to close in front of you.

I refused to drive the tractors with those nanny systems installed.

The last thing I wanted was to be pushing 80,000 lbs down the road in the snow and ice, or even rain, and have some idiot come around me and cut me off, so he can whip in and out of traffic, and have the brakes lock down and cause me to Jack knife and cause a big accident.

At first the company was a little upset and asked me why I was refusing to drive them. After I explained my reasoning, and informed them that they paid me to be a professional driver and that I had a safe driving record for 15 years, they decided I didn't have to drive them. They also decided to not implement those nanny systems on any more of their tractors. They still kept the cameras, which was fine by me.

Drive by wire, if it flakes out, you can always turn off the ignition and bring the vehicle to a stop.

Brake by wire, if it flakes out, your only option would be to gear down and apply the parking brake, which I assume would still be cable operated.
