2018 Z71 suspension, are the stock shocks really different?

I was reading the above review and Jalopknik apparently was given the following info:

“The Z71 suspension uses the same size shocks and spring rates as non-Z71 trim levels. To optimize off-road performance, they’re tuned to be softer at low speed inputs, which provides more cushion while driving over obstacles. Rebound dampening has also been tuned to increase control in high velocity motion; this prevents the vehicle from bottoming out in off-road settings.”

I have a 15 Suburban than I have modified with Bilstein 5100 all around. Front is now sitting 1-3/4" higher giving me a great level look I wanted.

My question is, can Anyone comment on how the stock z71 shocks/suspension feels compared to Bilstein or even the stock LT suspension (non mag/non self levelling/non Z71)?

Is it really tuned softer?

I drive on crappy road, hence my curiosity.

Are you asking about the 2018 suspension or the 2015 suspension?

I thought 2015 to 2020 all had the same suspensions/ same platforms, all same different trim levels throughout the years.

Your not going to notice a real difference with the OEM units. A properly tuned aftermarket shock will outperform stockers. Take a look at Thulen GM tuned king shocks (they have a comparison video to stock). Bilstein in my experience run a touch stiffer but overall handle much better. I run Kings and while they are spendy, they really change the ride/handling even on a daily driver that sees 99% street.

These Thulen GM Tuned King Shocks seems like the would be exactly right what I am looking for with their Stage 1 tuning.
Now the price tag at 2400 is out of reach for what I would want to spend. Is there a less spendy option that has some of these super comfortable potholes absorbing characteristics?

not really. Shocks are kinda one of those things that you “have to pay to play”.

and its Thuren.

It’s basically

Entry - Bilstein
Middle - Fox 2.0
High (OEM 2.5s) - Fox/King/Icon/ADS, etc.
Custom (3.0s) - Kings, etc.

Im replacing my 17 Z71s here shortly and I’m leaning 2.5s.
