I have never heard a cracked flexplate make a noise like that. I still think it is a lifter noise or rocker, I doubt the rocker is it though, or an exhaust stud broke. Did you look at all the exhaust studs? I also think it is not the exhaust stud broken but you did not say you checked for that.

I haven't check the exhaust studs. Just tearing into valve covers now and checking those out. Little bit of play in the rockers, but nothing crazy

So, 4 busted exhaust bolts. That'll be the next thing I replace to see if it fixes the issue, and then I'll also check out the flexplate while I'm down there. Really appreciate all the input.

I have had a tick ever since owning my 02. I'm now convinced it's piston slap. From all the reading I've done, I don't think it's anything to worry about.
The Piston Slap is more of a knock than a tick and should go away within a minute or so. Any longer and it is probably something else. Mine goes away after around 30-40 seconds.

I have had those bolts loosen up and did not appear to have any thread locker on them.

Did you ever determine if it was the flex plate? Mine is cracked so I am wondering if this is the cause of the ticking sounds
