so I hit the button on my back liftgate and it open all the way when it gets to the top it pops and then it starts closing what causes that it won't stay open and closes on top of me

what happens when you open it manually? if it will not stay up firmly on it's own then the gas cylinders may need to be replaced

Your range sensor needs to be reset. Assuming your gate worked in good nick before, either hit the transponder or console button during its up cycle to stop its motion or you may have to hold it until the actuator motor stops.

Once lift gate stops short, raise the gate all the way up as far as it will go. Hit the button to close it and wait for the motor to stop. If it won’t close, manually lower it when the motor isn’t running. Wait a few minutes and see if it learned its new range.

If it didn’t work on this try, wait until later in the day to try it again. The actuators don’t like being short cycled.
