This is probably a stupid question, but one I never needed to ask before because I always bought packages that included them... Does it matter what kind of TPMS sensor I buy?

I’m piecing together new wheels and tires for my ‘04 Suburban 1500 and plan to get some sensors too. I see there are so many different styles of sensors that I’m not sure which I should buy. Do I need to worry about comparability with one versus another? Can I get any generic and program myself without special scan tools?

I went with OEM Delco https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010GEPWW when I got my brother in law's 20" silverado wheels. Programming was simple:

1. Apply parking brake. Turn ignition to ON position (engine off)
2. Turn headlight switch from OFF to parking lamps 4 times within 4 seconds. A double horn chirp will sound and the TPMS telltale will begin blinking to indicate the learn mode is enabled.
3. Starting at the LF tire increase/decrease pressure until horn sounds.
4. After horn sounds, proceed as in step 3 for the next 3 sensors in the following order : RF, RR LR.
5. After LR sensor has been learned, turn ignition to OFF position. Adjust all tires to pressure listed on tire placard. *If headlight switch does not enable TPMS Learn Mode, use TPMS Learn button on dash.

I recommend AC Delco OEM as well. They’re kind of hard to get to if they quit working so go with the best.

As far as I can tell, my other 3 are original from '04. I expect the others to die soon.
Yeah I replace all 4 when one goes. It’s the batteries that usually go and if one does I’m pretty sure the others will be right behind it.

Mine have all been replaced with rubber-stemmed ones. I don't much like the metal corroding on the hard stem type.

I used the rubber ones too, in fact I’m not sure if you can still get the metal ones.
