I have a 2002 GMC Yukon w/ 5.3 engine. I have been noticing a ping, a thunk... OK, no real way to explain the sound but it's highly likely coming from the gas tank and the sound is likely when the gas tank flexes during expansion and contraction. Sounds like a piece of metal flexing out during expansion or flexing in when contracting. I only notice it when I have parked and that is possibly only because there are no other sounds like traffic or road noise at the time. Usually within about 30 seconds of shutting off the engine will I hear the sound. Can't say it happens more or less frequent when the outside air temp is higher or lower.
The sounds is NOT causing any kind of performance issue what so ever but wondering if someone could explain as I'm curious if it could be leading to a potential issue.
I hate to add any info that might be leading with regarding to what is causing the issue but about a year ago I replace the Evap canister. Can't say for sure or not if it started back then but just a thought.
