The transmissions are totally computer controlled now. The only reason to use a moving part to control them is that people expect a shifter to be in a certain place in a car. Even then, most car companies have moved to little joystick-type things.

I get the consumer preference for a physical shifter, but I think it's waning. Lots of these dial and push button shifters showing up in new designs.

If the production vehicle comes out looking anything like this rendering then I'd say GM has a winner. I just hope the designers that re-did the Silverado don't have a say in the next-gen full size SUV designs....

They kind of have to. I watched an interview a few months ago with a spokesperson for the new Silverado - He said that Chevy and GMC were trying to create distinct design languages that could be shared across all the pickups, SUVs, and crossovers in their lines. That's why the 2020 Acadia has very similar grille and taillights to the T1xx Sierra. The 21 Yukon will probably incorporate the same elements. Also notice how the 2020 Blazer has similar design elements to the T1xx Silverado - thin headlights and larger lower grille section.

ya all the sierra's/silverado's, tahoe/yukon/suburban/xl's basically team share the same setup, coming 2021 though Cadillac will have there own exclusive team and apparently will not be sharing the same designs like they have in the past.

Interesting they hired a predator as a test driver. His knowledge of tech must be useful.
