I’M SORRY. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO GO UNDER “WHAT DID YOU DO WITH YOUR TAHOE SECTION”. MODS, PLEASE MOVE IT. THANK YOU

What better way to celebrate 4th of July than driving your Tahoe to an air strip, unloading your vette and racing other Corvettes on the 1/2 mile?
God Bless Our Beautiful Country! Happy 4th everyone!

Car companies are all dealing with the same issue there and mostly coming up with the same solution. To embed a large MMI interface fully into the dashboard requires you to either build a very high cowl (interferes with line of sight forward) or to position the screen lower in the dash (forces the driver to look away from the road).

The iPad-stuck-to-the-dash gives you an MMI close to your field of vision and that takes up as little space in your field of view as possible.

I'm not asserting it's elegant - we have a Mercedes C-class which might have the most beautiful interior of a sub $100K car I've ever seen if not for the hideous screen - but it is the solution the industry has lit upon, more or less.

Except for Volvo. Their solution is an iPad looking screen in a similar location as the current Suburban or Ford Fusion. In addition, certain functions are duplicated on the instrument cluster so that you can make adjustments from the steering wheel. In my vehicles, I rarely touch the center screen.

Forgot about that. Yeah, Volvo did a nice job. The xc90 interior is a beautiful place to be. The tablet is a little awkward but not as bad as the ram. It’s like they gave the ram designers a Ritalin IV and then they designed the XC interior.

I have to admit it makes sense. The transmissions are all computerized, so any kind of moving part like a column tree or a console shifter is only there for aesthetics at this point anyway. And they take up room.
I have the dial, column shifter and stick in my vehicles. For the trucks, I prefer the column shifter as opposed to push buttons on the dash. Less of a reach.

The biggest complaint with the Volvo is that the Sensus System is it is laggy. So far, I have not experienced it in my V90. The interiors in the 60 and 90 series vehicles are virtually identical. And the seats in a Volvo, to die for.

Which is why auto manufacturers should let go and allow 3rd parties to create their interfaces. CarPlay is all I see in my cars anyway but even tighter integration would be great.

And wireless! I mostly use CarPlay too but hope they incorporate the wireless Bluetooth option. I know BMW had it a few years back, as an option.

I never use my GM navigation except for looking at the map if I’m just driving around doing errands and don’t need Waze for traffic. However, I did use the GM navigation for the first time when my cell phone stopped working. I would have been screwed too without the vehicle’s built in navigation as I was traveling and had no idea which side streets to take. And I don’t keep maps in the car anymore, so the vehicle nav was a nice backup system, and I actually kind of liked it too so might use it again in some situations.
