I actually like this about my truck, annoying that the screen goes blank when open it but it goes down as as soon as you put it in reverse, for the backup cam.
I just can’t wait until it breaks, curious to see how much GM charge’s themselves to fix it

Yep. It’s the newest fad for sure. My Range Rover has one. Not a huge fan but at least the RR sits flush with the dash. Don’t like the look when they stick out...looks like an afterthought IMO.
Car companies are all dealing with the same issue there and mostly coming up with the same solution. To embed a large MMI interface fully into the dashboard requires you to either build a very high cowl (interferes with line of sight forward) or to position the screen lower in the dash (forces the driver to look away from the road).

The iPad-stuck-to-the-dash gives you an MMI close to your field of vision and that takes up as little space in your field of view as possible.

I'm not asserting it's elegant - we have a Mercedes C-class which might have the most beautiful interior of a sub $100K car I've ever seen if not for the hideous screen - but it is the solution the industry has lit upon, more or less.

I’m fine with a screen, hell make it as big as you think you can fit. Just don’t make it look like it was an after thought added to the dash with a iPad holder i bought from Best Buy for $50; Make it look like it belongs there and actually fits “into” the dash.

Nice work; those are the two counterexamples. The current E-class does indeed go the opposite direction, and it's one of the only current cars that does. It's the "high cowl" extreme I mentioned, and to my eyes the dash is awkwardly obtrusive. Otherwise, a very elegant car.

As for the Range Rover - Land Rover sticks to tribal design standards in a number of ways, and they are sticking to the approach of keeping the MMI at elbow level. I think it's too low.

Audi has been doing the same, though I don't think it's as elegant as Rover's design.
Audi's approach is a bit different yet. They put some of the MMI information, especially the time-sensitive stuff like navigation info, in the driver stack, where our eyes must move as a normal matter. With that plan, they can get away with placing the center MMI, which [I think] provides less time-sensitive stuff like music info. So placement is less important. Brilliant, actually.

Maybe that’s why I bought both, they don’t have terrible android tablets glued vertically onto the dash lol.

Genesis does a good job too.
