2003 Escalade, AWD.

When turning left, there is a rhythmic rub/bind noise . . . rub, rub, rub, rub, rub . . . . that goes away when not turning left.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

have you jacked it up and looked under the truck? could be the wheel hub, could be other things could simply be the tire rubbing on the splash shield is it lifted/lowered? oversize wheels/tires? you can check for the wheel hub while the wheel is off the ground grab it and to wiggle it and see if it has any play at 12 & 6, a small amount of play is normal at 3 & 9 because of the steering, you can also spin the wheel and listen for any noises. inspect your front axle's, look for any broken or missing suspension parts.

if the front axles are getting loose or whatever rotating tires by hand you can listen for noises as doubeleive mentioned. while spinning it slowly pay attention for any spot while turning that you feel any resistance might not be much. also grab the axle on the inner edge and check for play. as far as the wheel bearing goes if it has gotten to the point you have bearing play its a definite. if your an attentive vehicle owner and actually noticed it before the bearing started getting chewed up you may not feel any play but you should hear a bit while a spinning. also as swath mentioned timken or acdelco wheel bearings dont waste your time with anything else. i made the bad choice on past gm vehicles not again.

Thanks, this gives me something to work with.

Prior to the constant rub-rub-rub-rub when turning left, very occasionally when I would be going downhill, turning left, there would be a little "skip", but nothing constant and regular.

If it was not AWD, I would not have the axle and differential to be concerned about.

This does not look good:

a grinding and a rub rub sound are pretty distinct differences.

Wanna try to explain that to my wife?

When she came back from a trip, she said there was a grinding sound. I took it for a drive and it is a rub-rub-rub-rub.

;)

Now that I re-read my OP, I see that I avoided saying "grinding", because it is not a metal-on-metal grinding sound.

If you have the Chrome 17s, check to see if they are peeling on the inside of the rim and rubbing against the brake hardware or brake shield. I had a similar issue and for me, it was the chrome peeling causing the rub when I made slow right turns.

I did this, and there is a small, bot noticeable, amount of play at 12 & 6.

As a comparison, I did the same thing for the passenger side, and there is a small amount of play in that one, too. I checked lug nuts, just to eliminate that, and they were all tight.

While off the ground, I put the tranny in neutral, and rotated each wheel, and could not feel any irregularities. Just a casual look at the axles, and they seem OK. I say that because if there's a problem there, our mechanic will find it. Last Fall I took another vehicle to him to turn the front rotors, and he replaced the CV axles; the boots were destroyed on both of them.

Is there any way this could be normal?
