DD head unit advise

hi, I’m looking for advice on a dd head unit to replace the factory Bose unit in my 2005 Yukon. I’d like to be able to play music and make phone calls through my phone so Bluetooth is likely a must. I’d also like to keep my steering wheel controls.

I’m on a tight budget so I’d like to spend as little as possible but I’m not sure what all I need - head unit, harness, adapters? Also please suggest a low cost head unit that fits the bill. Walmart seem to have dd units for just over $100 but they may be crap?

I couldn't recommend anything from walmart, you could save just a little more money and then get a lower end pioneer nex series and have some great features and dvd

yes you will need a module to make it work with the factory amp and retain the chime's and a steering wheel control adapter (swc), some kits may come with everything you need, you can save yourself some money by shopping online, local radio shops usually have a premium markup price wise.
you can go to websites like PAC audio and they have a menu to select your make/model/year and then you can see the modules they offer, write down the part #'s you need then punch them into amazon/ebay and you can find them cheaper than retail.

I just put a Pioneer in my 06 Denali. Bluetooth calling capability, add-on satellite radio capability, etc. Does not have nav or disc options, but those weren't on my list of requirements.

Got it, and the necessary SWC interface adapter from Crutchfield.com. Bundled together was less than $300.

Everything fit, installation was a breeze.

i just did a swap, ill have to check the model. was a pretty easy install. but the PAC harness which keeps steering controls only worked for a bit. Everything works, but i lost steering wheel. Kind of a hassle, but ill have to figure out how to reset it at some point. I think i am all in for maybe $400 and a few hours of my time.

Check the plug from the PAC to the head unit. I've had it come loose a few times, to the point where I am about to figure out how to zip tie, tape, etc it, so it doesn't fall out again.

I don't get why people actually want to keep those door chimes. Maybe if you have kids that could freak you out, but I prefer to not have those annoying sounds. You can always add the module later if you really want that noise.

Bluetooth has pretty much been a standard feature for a long time. You have to go ridiculously cheap or really old and out of your way to find a double din that doesn't have Bluetooth. If you are not concerned with GPS, you can find a double din (if you just want one that size, but will have the same features as a single Din with a screen) for $100-$300. Dual and Boss are some of the cheapest brands you can find. You can probably find one for $100, and even less if you are that tight, and don't care about other features. JVC is a hair up, then you have the big companies.

You will need a mount, ($10), A harness for your brand ($10). An adapter for your steering wheel controls, IIRC is about $70-$80, but you can always add it later and listen without it for the time being.

What is your budget?
What about the rest of your system? stock or ? Do you have amps, subs, aftermarket speakers? or do you want to?
What are your end goals?

Just going off being on a tight budget, I hope you are doing the install yourself, or there goes your budget. The install is very easy on these vehicles and there are youtube vids too. Id suggest starting with crutchfield.com . They usually have sales, (and if you can be patient, the next best one should be Memorial day, in about a month). If you need it, Crutchfield offers support for 3 months on everything they sell, and I think they price match. They will include the harness, the mount, wiring instructions, and even some other stuff to help for free.

Other than them, you might want to take a quick look at your craigslist, or offerup. You should be able to find what you want used well within budget, and might even be able to get more as a package deal with subs, amps, or speakers. They might be willing to help with your install (so you can test if before you buy). It really doesn't take long at all after you do it once or twice.

if you have a local bestbuy you should also check there in these few weeks. they just had the new model hu come in so they have a bunch of clearance stuff. at my local bb they had a nice jvc on clearance for 100 bucks. i wanted touchscreen or i would have scooped it up. also refurbished models off crutchfield still are backed by a crutchfield warranty and still generally come with cheap or free installation parts. the pioneer fh-x70bt isnt a bad bt unit and i seen one of those for 80 the other day. i actually just pulled that model out of my civic over the weekend for a touchscreen. your probably not local to me or id sell it to you cheap nothing wrong with it i just wanted something different.

I went with the pumpkin android head unit. Love it. Will not go back to regular head units after. So many things you can do. Other hand, randomly the steering wheel controls works most of the time. So who knows. Works enough for me though

Thanks everyone for the great responses. I’ve actually picked up a cheap FM transmitter that sounds surprisingly good. This’ll hold me over until I piece together some of your suggestions on eBay
