Hello everyone,
The Issue:
On cold mornings, when I turn left, I hear/feel a rubbing noise from the front of the vehicle. This is especially apparent when I am in the parking garage going under 10mph. The vehicle also slows down much quicker than normal (loses momentum quicker than normal) when in the parking garage, while I am turning left. It is a loud squealing sound that seems to be coming from the tires, BUT I can also feel it in the steering wheel & can feel some sort of vibration in the pedals. I have gotten under the vehicle and can't identify any scratching or rubbing marks on the wheel well, the UCA's have no scratches, no marks anywhere that would confirm that tire rubbing is occurring.

Details about my Tahoe:
2007 (NBS), z71 4x4
164,000 miles
Rack & Pinion - replaced 2 months ago
Rear Lift - 1.5inch spacer
Front Lift - ProComp Black Series Coil-Overs (provides a 2.5 inch lift on the front - essentially just a level kit)
Ties/Rims - 275/60/R20 -- in my profile picture those are the stock (18inch) rims. I have new rims with 5" of backspacing now (see below pictures).
** FabTech Upper control arms**
-- according to 4WheelParts (in Nashville, TN) - these UCA's should only be used with a 6 inch lift kit or more, due to the angle that they are made with. The 4WheelParts in Austin, TX did not mention this issue and thus told me that these were the UCA's that I needed to use-- because my factory UCA's have gone out and been replaced a number of times so I wanted to get Uniball UCA's)
--- 4WheelParts (Nashville) has said that I should change to the "Camburg UCA's" as they are made to fit any type of lift (or just a leveling). They also stated that because the angle of the FabTech UCA's are not made to fit a 2.5" lift, that it is causing issues with the Tie Rods & the alignment of the vehicle.

Your help will be greatly appreciated as I am not sure what to do at this point.

Kind regards,
Will (07-z71 Ghost)

This is very similar to a post from last January and it got some great comments but none that seem to be directly related to my issue. The thread is from 1/19/2017 "Grinding Noise Turning Left" (by: Plimbob). However, mine is not a metal on metal grinding sound.

Have you checked the hubs?

Thanks for reading and responding.

I have not. The vehicle is currently with 4WheelParts. I explicitly aske them to check the wheel bearings and the response was "we will definitely check everything around the wheel and steering components".

For my own sanity, can you recommend the best way for me to check the hubs on my own (once I get the vehicle back)? I live at an apartment, and do not have personal access to a rack or lift.

Jack it up and feel for play 12-6. They're should be none. 9-3 play is a little more acceptable from steering components. Also spin the wheels by hand and feel /listen for any squeaking or grinding. If you can hear them while driving, opposite turns will shift the weight onto each side and usually exaggerate any noise.

You sure she's not in 4x4?

4WheelParts Diagnosis - the squealing was coming from the FabTech Uniball upper control arms. They said it is a normal occurrence with unibal UCA's. Said that all of the steering components were good. Just that the UCA's are causing an improper amount of caster. Replacing the FabTech's with the Icon Delta Joint UCA's (they gave me a full credit and then some so I don't have to bear hardly any of the cost of the difference between the two sets).

Anyone disagree with this diagnosis? Please let me know if you do, I am all ears. Always happy to learn more.

I had this happen to me a little over a year ago. I would make a turn (left or right) and i would get a grinding noise that sounded like it was coming from a tire. The truck (Yukon) would lose momentum like it was almost in limo mode. Almost like the tire was completely flat and the rim was eating through it. Come to find out it was a simple fix. My steering wheel position sensor. Purchased one from amazon for $60+ bucks. It’s been over a year. Hasn’t happened since then.
