I got a particularly nasty rock chip over the weekend which I'm sure is karma since I was someplace I had no business being at the time.

The good news is that the chip is not in my line of site. The bad news is the chip is in the middle of the windshield and I'm super **** so I keep looking at it. The damage is probably the size of a dime and no "spider webbing" has occurred. i.e. the cracking has not spread. Also my Tahoe is a 2016 LTZ model with heads up display.

I called a couple of glass shops and was told they replace with an aftermarket piece of glass and that there is a possibility of distortion with the HUD. Also called my dealer and they had nothing for me...

Has anyone with an HUD equipped truck had to have your windshield replaced and what was your experience?

Also, can the factory glass be ordered and shipped to a installer for replacement?

Thanks in advance.

I don’t have HUD, but I had a similar chip on the passenger side. Glass shop filled it and it is supposed to prevent it from growing. It has been over 3 months and no change.

UPDATE:

Called a local Cadillac/Chevy dealer and they sent the folks to my job that they subcontract their windshield work to. Just as you guys predicted the chip is probably 85% gone. Can't tell at all from the outside. On the inside it looks like bug splatter on the windshield. I'll roll with it like this for now and if it gets worse I got a dealer quote of $576 for a new windshield plus replacement costs.

Thanks for the replies!

a glass repair shop may be able to patch it and make 75% of it disappear, normal price for that is about $35 so it's worth a try
My insurance company covered the repair 100%. If I had to replace it, my deductible comes first. UGH

If you do buy a windshield, go with OEM. It will save you a lot of hassle. Many aftermarket windshields have the placement for the frontview camera off and it'll cause problems. I've also seen a lot of aftermarket windshields make the HUD image a little fuzzy (and they claimed to be HUD windshields). People claim they're the same but they're not.

I was formerly in the windshield replacement business. If the cracks are less than two inches get it repaired ASAP. Getting chips repaired before contaminates can get in the crack helps it disappear. Yes, they can be made invisible if the conditions are right. A good tech can run the resin out a couple of inches but anything beyond that is risking a larger crack. I currently have two repairs in my windshield and will tolerate more to avoid replacing the whole glass. Replacing the glass takes skills that a lot of glass replacement shops don't have due to high turnover. And don't think your dealer is any better, they sub out the glass work to the local glass shops. If you need a replacement find someone with a couple years of experience, and if you can avoid it DO NOT USE YOUR INSURANCE. Merely calling them dings your account as an "incident", pay out of pocket and save the ding for when you need it.
