For the last year I have really wanted to build an overland rig. Has anyone seen or built one. I have found all kinds of lifted builds but that's not what I'm looking to do. I want a a rig that's also a home away from home in the wild.

From the lack of resources I have found on doing a build on a GMC makes me believe I will have to fabricate everything myself. Damn those Toyota boys and their crazy overland rigs.

Well you're not really starting with the best vehicle to do an overland build. The 4WD systems on these trucks is really mostly for bad on road conditions and mild off roading. They don't have any serious capabilities to get you out of a jam or take you to hard to get to spots. The size alone is not ideal.

A Colorado CC ZR2 wouldn't be a bad base vehicle, a last gen LR4 would be great, a Jeep GC Trailhawk could also probably work, and that new Gladiator looks ideal for an overland build, although that thing is almost as big as my Raptor.

I understand the off road limitations. I was thinking more of a vehicle camping rig vs a true off-roader. A build that would make it more comfortable when camping with my kids.

I would at some point want a Colorado or an LR4. But I figured I would try to work with what I have at this point. And my 2 Door Rubicon is a great start, but just not big enough for the kids.

I've actually thought of the same thing! These long wheel base versions are big enough to be a "home away from home". Perfect for family/kids camping. You can even sleep inside in a pinch. I'm really curious and want to follow what you come up with.

There was a thread here for an adventure truck that was for sale. Insane build. I'll see if I can find it ...

Not really for overlanding but I plan on using mine for weekend camping for our mountain bike races. I'm going to build a folding stand for the cargo area to match the folded seat heights to sleep in while the wife and I test the waters. If we like it I'll be looking into a RTT.

I think a RTT combined with a SUV tent will ultimately be a good setup for a weekend, and will also act as supplemental sleeping room when we do longer trips with a travel trailer (with 4 kids I'm trying to think of creative ideas to justify a smaller TT)

Please update with pictures and details as this progresses. Sounds very interesting!
