I just bought a 2012 cluster on eBay so I should be safe with that. I'll just have to use one of the odometer services and get the mileage matched to my truck and hopefully be good to go.

I hate that my 2008 Escalade doesn't have the instant MPG "gauge" since my 2007 SRX has it and my old 2005, 2006, and 2007 STS' all had it. I want to change out the cluster with one from a newer truck that has it and I'll just get the mileage programmed to match my truck. I thought I remembered seeing a thread somewhere about it but I can't find it now. What year did the instant MPG start in the Escalade? If the cluster shows the ambient temperature and compass (which appears to be 09-14) is that the one that will have the instant MPG?
it started in the 1980s with the 864 engine aka Modulated Displacement
aka Active fuel management, aka displacement on demand , aka Dynamic Fuel Management.

instant MPG is also available on many other GM cars... :p

Oldest memory of it for me was in my mother's '88 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. Don't remember it in Dad's '85 Cadillac Brougham or my Grandfather's '82 Oldsmobile Toronado. None of the G or F-Bodies had it that I remember. But I never had a Berlinetta!

It was an exclusive to the ones with the VFD clusters and a option on the non VFD you can also make a mod switch for pre-06 trucks/tahoe/sub so it will show up where the mileage is on the VFD

option on the impala from the 1990+ VFD cluster or overhead (DIC -VFD(with the 1999-2005,monte-carlo 2000-2006). it was only a Cadillac exclusive in the 80s then became a option on the 1990s GM cars

What's a VFD cluster? Sounds like a bomb!

I have to ask, "Why?" because I apparently don't understand the need for it. It's not like these trucks get Prius-like mileage.

Second, the computer is not really that accurate on mileage. My "gallons used" and "avg mileage" numbers are generally no better than ±10% compared to actual.

I had to drive to Atlanta, so I thought I'd do an experiment. I left Michigan with a full tank of gas and started driving down I-75. Didn't drink any coffee and wanted to see how far I could drive without stopping, having a 39-gallon tank and 500+ mile range. I was about 40 miles from Chattanooga, and the computer was saying 90 miles range, so I continued driving. When the fuel range hit 86, I ran out of gas. Fortunately, the AAA showed up about 15 minutes later with 5 gallons for me, so it wasn't a major inconvenience.

So the computer was thinking my fuel range was 86 miles, and I was averaging 14.2 MPG, so that means the computer thought I had a little over 6 gallons left in the tank. Not sure if that's an error of the gas gauge, or the time/distance/speed calculations of the computer, but I was completely unimpressed and it just reinforced to me that these numbers are barely useful in any way. I would expect the instant MPG number to be no different.

One night I was trying to run the tank down to switch fuels. 11% fuel left with a range of 50 miles. Drove over an hour through the back roads and such for fifty miles and it still said 10% and 50 miles range! Then, when coming down an overpass the gauge went to 3% and back to 10% so it was time for fuel!

When the gauge reads a 1/4, there's about 11 gallons left in a 1500 Suburban/Yukon XL. When the light comes on there's about 3.8 gallons left.
