our 6.2 RST is at 800 miles. Its getting an oil change this weekend before it gets put away for the winter.

It will be run on Amzoil as is all of our vehicles every 5,000 miles after that.

May be overkill,,,, but its cheap overkill and I get a warm and fuzzy feeling that im doing the best I can
you said it gets put away ? how long do you keep it away for without running the engine ? and do you empty all the oil or do you top it off with oil.

There has been a lot written on the GM oil monitoring system From everything I have read it is safe to use. A particular time sequence is not the most efficient way for OCI's. If you are concerned send your oil out to a testing lab like Blackstone at some intervals. You can also use an oil specialist like Terry Dyson (no affiliation other than I have used him in the past). He will help guide you on the best oil and when to change. When I did this with my Audi allroad, I found 10K mile OCI were fine. In fact I still had approx 2k miles left on the oil before it was depleted. It was a safe time to do it. I don't always get to the oil change at exact miles.

But...

For break-in, I change my oil every 1k-1.5k miles. For the first 5-10k miles.

I bought a 2011 Denali used. I was told the same thing - to go by the dash computer and change the oil when it said to. That turns out to be about 10,000 miles. I was also advised to use a good synthetic such as Mobil 1. Owners manual says to use 5-30w oils with the "dexos" label.

I'm at around 5K miles when my OLD is between 20-40%. In 2013 GM changed the calibration to set the percentage to 20% when 5K miles was reached. Now I know it's 7500 miles tops and 1 year in duration maximum. Most of these newer vehicles use 0W20.

My engine oil is dirty after 5K miles and runs much better after changing it. Thinking about dropping the interval down to 4k miles. It runs on plain old Mobil One 5W30.

Blackstone Labs says 5K interval is fine for mine thus far.

It wont come out on the streets once the salt flies. It will get started a few times over the winter and maybe around the block depending on conditions, but not guaranteed. Fluids will all be topped off like it is going cross country tomorrow except fuel. That will be left low to be able to top of with fresh in the spring as it will loose octane as it sits as we all know.

It has yet to see rain or snow and we bought a 2003 Denali for our airport vehicle as the wife and I both travel for work so we have the luxury of not having to drive it when the weather is bad.

That seems in line with what the dealer told me,,,,, they offered some free oil changes but the OLD had to be at 30% or leff for them to do it.

I understand... I have a similar case with another vehicle that I leave in my parents house during the winter season and I do keep it low on fuel as I also agree with you on that strategy. I am always wondering though about the oil ! Whether to fill it all of the way to the top with oil to keep all the engine parts soaked with oil and prevent moisture build up as it doesn’t get driven sometimes for more than 1 year or year and half.

I, too, use Mobil 5w30 (high milage full synth). Blackstone has told me to push my interval higher the last two times. First up to 6k, then to 7k. I have stuck close to 5k and will continue to do so.

The only thing soaked in oil will be the oil pan !!! It doesnt touch any parts with the engine off.

Where do you live and what’s you’re winter vehicle for when you’re home on the weekends? The older Denali?
