Transmission Rebuild time! (maybe)

Did you use your new scan tool to diagnose and test the transmission? What is the life of the transmission oil?

No... I haven't. I have not yet dug into the tech2 menues, not sure what I need to be looking at.

Is there a sensor in the transmission for fluid life? Or are you asking when was the last time I changed it? I've only owned this truck for <1000 miles, so I haven't ever changed the transmission fluids :).


@thompsoj22, have you used streetsmart before?

Well first off, you should scan the transmission module for trouble codes. As for the sensor, don't think so. I reckon it's along the same lines as the Engine Oil Life Monitor.

If you're serious about fixing this yourself, you have half of what you need so far, you need access to the shop manual next. You can get it via download or disc off ebay from SeriousCTBuyer or through a subscription to AllDataDIY. I like and use both methods. The "Tech2" and shop manual go hand in hand. Like I said earlier, The Tech2 might be able to unstick a stuck valve or identify that only the TECM needs changing and not a complete overhaul.

no, i havent. just giving an example to inspire you to avoid a local rebuild, a reman is absolutely the way to go and their warranty is oem comparable. I will be in your shoes eventually as we tow a 4500lb travel trailer behind our new to us 08 yukon denali xl1500 with 125k miles on it! honestly if you like the size,safety,comfort as much as we do the trans and a rear main seal is an acceptable cost of ownership.

I will add what swathdriver said is accurate. your transmission symptom has not been accurately diagnosed. electronic component faults/failures can be the problem and the mechanical portion of the trans still be sound.

I will be in your shoes eventually as we tow a 4500lb travel trailer behind our new to us 08 yukon denali xl1500 with 125k miles on it! honestly if you like the size,safety,comfort as much as we do the trans and a rear main seal is an acceptable cost of ownership.

Like they said, you might just have an electronic gremlin. But from reading your posts it seems like you've been set on a built tranny and this current issue is your excuse/green light for the built trans. If that's the case just wait a bit longer, save some more $$$ and just get the built trans.

If you're looking for a low mileage factory unit and want to do the work yourself. Check out car-parts.com. you can do a search for the newest year of your generation of your model with the lowest mileage. You may find an almost brand new transmission for a lot less than you think with low mileage, no core charge and free shipping. I bought my hard to find Factory HD hood in my color code through this site and had it shipped to my office. You may even find something that is local. b60770ba63c5ca8571284be33070210d.jpg

Lol, fair enough. I do appreciate the input. My biggest issue with those sites is I've had a really hard time finding much information and reviews on how good of a product I'm buying. I know they say they offer a warranty, but the real test is when you need to use it. Until then, it's only worth the paper it is printed on.

Yes, that's possible. I'm not really looking for a green light here, as what I want isn't going to happen when I'm on a forced timeline. What I wanted originally was to find a reputable shop, with the right experience, with the right tools, with the right reputation, to build one of these transmission in a way that it can take the 'omph' that I would like to build into this truck in the future. Right now, I just want it back on the road so it isn't a really expensive paperweight.

I've look, there wasn't much in my areas. Cheapest/best option I found was a $1400 (w/$200) unit with >70000 miles on it. I did heavily consider it, but it was a wrecked Silverado and I'm not sure how good of a bandaid it would of been.



I had a conversation with the GMC dealer that is around the corner from where I work. I didn't think to stop in originally, mostly because I forget they are there. It's a small dealer and, even though I drive past it every morning, it just blurs into the background for me. Anyway, I stopped in on my lunch break (yesterday) and the service manager and I had a good discussion. We talked about options and she gave me their pricing. She had me when she said her warehouse had one on hand and she could have it here next day if it was needed. So I drove home later that afternoon and picked it up and dropped it off right before they closed.

They tore into it this morning and I got a call around lunch. Lots of metal in the pan, but the tech said it could be rebuilt if we wanted it. The service manager gave me the price options and timelines for each, and with the warranty on the unit they offer (3yr 100k miles, good at any GM dealer) and the turn around times, I decided the price difference was worth the extra.


IDK, did I get oversold, maybe. Do I care... yes. Do I care enough to spend the next week or so of my evenings searching for the 'right' reman vendor and then paying the local shop for another 7-9hrs of labor to install it... no, not really. I'll take the piece of mind that if I have an issue with this new tranmission I can stop at any GM dealer in the country and tell them to fix it, instead of having to hope the company I bought it from honors their warranty.

I'll report back with the final out the door price once it is all done. Whooo!!!! I do appreciate all the support and feedback guys, I really do. I was kinda hoping to be able to provide some good information to the community on these rebuild places and all, but in the end I really want this thing back for Thansgiving travels, and the GMC dealer committed to having it ready by then.

It dosent get any better than 3 year 100k GM warranty recognized at GM dealers nationwide. Congrats IMO the vehicle is worth this setback and your family will be amazed at the comfort,space and safety on long roadtrips!

Yup, that's what I'm hoping. For being 7/8 years old, this thing is in pretty darn good condition, especially considering it's miles. It's got a few scuffs here and there, but isn't in better shape (by far) than my daily driver, so that's a win for me. But I'm betting the part of me that hates long road trips is going to appreciate the air ride suspension and heated/cooled seats :)

Hopefully she takes another 100k miles on the odometer before she needs to be retired, I think she has it in her.

Sorry folks, I've not been paying much attention to the board since the holiday.

Anyway, I got the Burb back the Tuesday before Thanksgiving with a shiny new transmissions. Total damage was $4250ish. Not great, but not bad. With the warranty figured in, I think I'm ok with that.

So far so good, haven't felt anything strange in how she drives, and it definitely drives better now that it did when I drove it off the lot.

So far so good, haven't felt anything strange in how she drives, and it definitely drives better now that it did when I drove it off the lot.

Well worth it in the long run. Now y'all can start enjoying the truck!
