Interesting read. I thought it was a tweeter back there so I was planning on installing a component set with the main speaker in the door and it's accompanying tweeter in the D-pillar. I thought it was a calculated design for those sitting in the second row to have highs but not blaring in their ears.

This would be a cheap (free) upgrade. I'm definitely doing it. Was trying to find feedback on how to take those panels off and ran into these details. Someone put a 4" back there successfully with some trimming. They also seem to speak positively with just replacing that speaker. Being that its a 12 ohm, if it was replaced with a 4 ohm, that would greatly increase the power right?

Since the front 2 channels of my bose amp are not being used, is there a way to focus all the bose power into the rear doors/d-pillar? I'm still lost on how this "parallel" runs. Somehow the rear doors and dpillars connect into 1 which goes into amp? If they go into amp seperately but share a channel, maybe we can cut the connection of rear door speakers to amp and redirect to where the front speakers connect. Do the same for the d-pillar speaker connections to amp and redirect to the rear door speakers. Seems like a little work but free additional power. Upgrade the d-pillar speaker and now system would really shine?

Notes on how to remove D-pillar panel:
"No special tools required.
Pry off the oval shaped screw covers on the pillar panel (they face each other in the hatch opening). Remove the screw under the cover.
Reach your fingers between the side glass and trim panel and pull the panel toward the front of the car. This will unseat the plastic "push in fasteners". Then un-clip the panel from the headliner trim."

THIS IS WHAT I THOUGHT AS WELL!!!! I had an extra component set and was going to do this but my install guy told me the speaker(s) would sound terrible in d-pillar because that channel not setup for full sound, just fill. If we were using our own amp or maybe tricking the bose amp into thinking that d-pillar wiring was really rear or front door wiring, maybe we can work some free magic....

Actually, since I have aftermarket HU, I can connect the rear door speakers to HU seperately and leave d-pillar speakers on bose amp right? I just need confirmation that the d-pillar speakers and rear door speakers connect to bose amp seperately. Even if they share, just means I wont have to run wiring, just tap into where they connect to amp.

I disconnected d pillar speakers. Not sure if it made a difference. The rear are loud enough but 20% improvement on nothing much is still nothing much. I hear you have to double power to hear a difference? I don't have good enough ears to properly test but the prices of unplugging is real easy, a little tricky on driver side.

Did you have something playing while you disconnected them or just do a before and after comparison?

I didnt. My neighborhood is super quiet and couldnt test the way I really want to. I'll try a walmart or something to test out.

I dont think anyone has confirmed this but are there just 2 wires goign to amp for the rear door and dpillar speakers? If so, an upgrade with amp and keeping wiring will power all the speakers (unless dpillars are disconnected). In the future, would love to throw some 3-4" drivers back there and power rear doors and d-pillar from same amp/channel.

Not sure on how many wires are connected at the amp... wiring diagram might tell you... @swathdiver
