Hi,

Just got a 2018 Yukon Denali XL with rear entertainment package. I've been trying to play movies from my Iphone and Ipad through HDMI. I got a lightning adapter to HDMI and plugged my Iphone in to it, and the HDMI cord to the adapter and to the HDMI port on the back of the center console. So the movie on my Iphone plays on the second row and third row drop down screen, but there is no sound from the movie through the car speakers and you can only hear it through the wireless headphones. On the main head unit when I press video the movie does not play on the screen even when the car is in park. It won't play on the main nav head unit up front. It does the same thing when I try and play netflix from my Iphone through the HDMI cord. Does anybody know what is wrong or if I am not doing something correctly? Any help would be great! Thanks!!

If you are talking about the screen in the center of the dash, you are not doing anything wrong. The system is designed not to play videos in view of the driver for safety reasons. States such as Virginia prohibit it, and I recall a recent fatal crash in which the police checked an iPhone and determined that the driver was apparently watching a video.

Best advice. Don’t do it and don’t try to do it. Things can only end badly if you do.

I saw another thread Friday night of adapters that let the passenger operate the navigation system while driving and watch movies I think. Crutchfeld was one of the links.

I was driving our family home last weekend in the evening and the car to my left drifted into my lane right beside my truck! BOTH the driver and passenger were reading on their stupid phones, they were so close I could see that they weren't watching movies or texting but reading text! I was speechless and then trying to be good by holding back the filthy words that wanted to come out of my mouth, settled for a long blast of the horn and a yelp! Knuckleheads!

Guys lets give his question a read and actually try and help here! He specifically said it was when he was parked, its not a video in motion issue, so rdr, the head unit is actually designed to mirror the back screens if the car is in park!

I had the same problem with my ipad when I was trying to watch something. I had to click around the inputs but still couldn't get it to play, but when I hooked up my laptop with the same method I got that to play on the front head unit, it was very odd. Ive heard of people hooking up apple tv to the back hdmi port and then just using airplay to stream, but that will only solve your problem of when you're in park like you're asking.

Thanks for the help. Yeah I'm trying to be able to connect my Iphone or Ipad to play movies on the second and third row screens for the kids when we go on trips. I wanted it to play when I am parked on the center front screen so I can see that it is set up correctly and playing for them. When parked on the front screen I don't get any picture. Also I cannot hear any sound through the cars speakers when playing on the second and third row screens, even when I switch to video from the home screen. Have you had any success playing movies from an Iphone/Ipad or anything else through the HDMI port? I don't have to have it play on the front center screen, just the second and third row, but hopefully playing properly with sound. What about a flash drive through the USB? Thanks!!

From the 2018 Yukon XL Infotainment System Guide:

Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto
If equipped, Android Auto and/or
Apple CarPlay capability may be
available through a compatible
smartphone. If available,
PROJECTION will appear on the
Home Page of the infotainment
display.
To use Android Auto and/or Apple
CarPlay:
1. Download the Android Auto
app to your phone from the
Google Play store. No app is
required for Apple CarPlay.
2. Connect an Android phone or
iPhone by using the compatible
phone USB cable and plugging
into a USB data port. For best
performance, use the device’s
factory-provided USB cable.
Aftermarket or third-party
cables may not work.
3. When the phone is first
connected to activate Apple
CarPlay or Android Auto, the
message “Device Projection
Privacy Consent” will appear.
. Touch Continue to launch
Apple CarPlay or
Android Auto.
. Touch Disable to remove
Apple CarPlay and Android
Auto capability from the
vehicle Settings menu.
Other functions may
still work.
PROJECTION on the Home Page
will change to Android Auto or Apple
CarPlay depending on the phone.
Android Auto and/or Apple CarPlay
may automatically launch upon USB
connection. If not, touch the
ANDROID AUTO and/or APPLE
CARPLAY icon on the Home Page
to launch.
Press Home on the center stack to
return to the Home Page.

So I'm not exactly using the same set up you are, because my 2016 doesn't have HDMI input. But...

I use the Lightning AV adaptor and then connect that to a Composite to HMDI adaptor (to the truck)

Then I normally have to go in to my phone app to make sure where my audio and video is projecting to. (like in youtube or on the mediaplayer)

Also it helps to turn off Bluetooth

Did you ever get this setup to work? Did you try turning off Bluetooth on you’re iPhone to get the sound to come through you’re speakers?

Just turn Bluetooth off, and it will work
You should not use the HDMI and connect to MyLink via Bluetooth at the same time.
