Tbh I don't want to spend a lot of money on mods. I'd rather have a turnkey engine...plus I'm not looking for tons of power. The only thing I would need at this point is an engine hoist and some time to swap.
However if I were to mod, what would you recommend that would match 496 performance?
I have a 6.0L and 8.1L suburban 2500 both completely intact.
Here are the specs: 2001 Chevy Suburban 2500HD 4x4 174,000 miles (6.0L)
2003 Chevy Suburban 2500HD 2WD 164,000 miles (8.1L)
To be honest I don't need both, and want to sell one. However, I like the 4WD...
I haven't tried that yet. The fluids I haven't checked either besides oil and transmission fluid.
That would be a good idea. I need to get some jack stands and a volunteer to analyze from underneath the vehicle.
Wow, that’s pretty loud. I haven’t heard it from outside, but inside it’s not that loud. Just a slight clunk, but I can feel the engagement and disengagement.
It’s my guess that the clunk when shifting from reverse to drive and vice versa comes from the play in that shaft that I was grabbing. Not sure if it’s a huge deal or not, but I don’t want to come across a catastrophic failure in the near future if I continue to leave it as is.

When I shift into reverse, I hear a slight thud with a split second hesitation. Also, when I take off, I hear a slight tinny grinding noise which goes away after hitting 10mph. What could it be?
I also have this oil leak. It leaks a palm sized puddle every two days...
I have an 8.1L (2x4) and a 6.0L (4x4) Suburban 2500. The 8.1L is getting a bit rusty and and contemplating selling it as is, but could probably utilize the more powerful engine with my less rusty 6.0L body and chassis. Will it drop right in?
If so, what would I need to swap?
I'm not sure how old the plugs are. I bought it last month and it seemed everything that I could check was good. I would have to take a plug out to get a look. I have no idea what the condition is on the fuel filter.
Are there any check engine lights? Check the fluid in the transfer case (top it off until it is right beneath the plug). Do the same with the rear diff.
I have a 2001 Suburban 2500 with the 6.0L. It has 174k miles and drives fine, BUT I seem to notice a weird intermittent engine stuttering/palpitating sensation when idling. No check engine codes (I even hooked up the OBD2 to make sure).
It is strange, because it seems like it's skipping a beat...
The 8.1L has the 4L85e, which I believe is a bit smaller than the Allison in size. I could swap out the electronics completely if needed (ECM and all). I would just need to wait until spring and dedicate a couple of weekends to get everything out and swapped.
I sold a Yukon XL to an Alaskan last month for a good deal. Quite the coincidence that he is Alaskan as well, but I suppose they travel out of state for those gnarly purchases.
