I haven't told my tale of woe, so here goes: I use my 2012 Denali almost exclusively to tow my 25 ft Coleman travel trailer. Over 9k miles towing last year, odometer reading about 135k miles at EOY. Arriving home in Nashville from a week Gulf Shores, AL in December, I was backing the trailer up my steep driveway and reverse quit. It would go into D just fine so I put the rig on the street and the next day I had one tow to put the trailer in its spot and one to the installer of rebuilt trannys. The weird thing was that the next day the truck would again go in reverse.

Of course, even before supply chain problems, in mid-December you'd have little luck having a rebuilt tranny shipped and installed by mid-January. Mine arrived Jan 21. The installer had pulled the old one's pan and told me there was a lot of metal in it, and checked the fluid flow through the OEM tranny cooling system and it was barely moving.

He installed a new radiator as well as the new tranny, and the infaltion-fueled total was $6300. Yikes!

I'm Black Bear Tuned and of course the tranny computer was reset. All I've done with BB is install the new engine and tranny maps and haven't researched, so I'm wondering how to get just the tranny map back. Do I uninstall the entire package and reinstall?

And yes, you guys can tell me to do my own research, that I should know my BB equipment a little better, and that I'm a noob. I can take it!

TL: DR
I spent $6300 repairing a ten year old truck yesterday.

Thanks George. The shop said to bring it in for inspection in a couple of weeks, so I'll be driving the Denali instead of my Ford Focus ST until then. After that I'll load the tranny file.

I figure the over/under of me hitting the brake instead of the Ford's clutch to be 7 in the next two weeks.

Oh boy. Your comments about the metal in the pan and flow through the transmission cooling system have me worried for you. Did they take the time to fully flush both of the transmission coolers and lines? A primary failure mode for the 6L80E in these trucks - especially when used for towing, is when the lockup clutch in the TC grenades and sends shrapnel through the transmission, while blocking the coolers and lines with debris. 135K would be about right.

Been awhile since I posted anything on this thread. Been in a 'spending money on the burb' trend lately. I think between a variety of services things are kind of getting worked out, so I'll likely keep driving it until the body disintegrates or I sell it.

Got new tires on it a few weeks back, coopers.
Whilst there, they do alignments on tire sales and they couldnt because I needed a new driver LBJ, so took to the mechanic and got a new driver LBJ because 0 degrees.
Then I took it back, then they said I needed a passenger LBJ and a upper control arm because bushings are compromised.
So, I ordered the parts from detroit axle, and by parts I mean the entire suspension kit - planning ahead here, and put on a new control arm, LBJ and front brakes.
Took it back and FINALLY got it aligned.

Took it to the dealer to get a coolant leak and PS leak investigated and they came up with a variety of stuff...so near future is:
New water pump and back brakes on Saturday
Then she goes to my indy mechanic for new oil cooler lines, new trans cooler lines, and new heater hoses on Monday.

Then....fingers crossed....shes good for awhile. I have some failed seals on the rear diff. Planning on doing a rear diff rebuild at some point maybe in 2023, but it doesnt leave anything on the ground so it hasnt gone full chevy yet.

The guy that rebuilt my trans told me if ever I am in a situation such as you described, to do the reverse in 4WD. That, supposedly, will take the brunt of force and put it on the transfer case, instead of the trans. It made sense at the time, but then I started pricing out transfer cases for some reason, and those suckers cost more than a damn junkyard trans....so is that any better?! Who knows.

The coolers took out the transmission, flow gets too low and its all over. The dealerships have a machine called the TransFlow which tests the flow of fluid through the lines and transmission cooler to see if its within spec.

I cannot understand how the lines and coolers get plugged up but they do.

My guy seemed to be very good about making sure the fluid flow was OK. Plus three years parts and labor warranty will focus the mind and near exclusive towing should grenade the tranny in less than that amount of time if fluid flow is substandard.

It does have the tow package, after all.

Unfortunately, I have no transfer case shifter because the Denali driving soccer Moms would never want to chip their nail polish while shifting. Thus the computer does the shifting unless you trick it with the brakes or parking brake.

GMT900 AWD Denalis are always in 4WD.

Thanks for sharing, I was searching on several other VIN-decoder websites, and they all seemed to have incorrect info. EX: the others said I had the 3.08 rear end. It's ironic because basically any website that ends in xxxxz.com reminds me of the shady places I allegedly checked out back when dial-up modems were the norm.
use all caps when entering the vin, this one is accurate, I have used while vehicle hunting online because dealers either post incorrect info, don't know what they have, or flat out lie.

Yeah I used that one a lot when I was truck hunting last January. Although it was proven somewhere in this thread that the data isn't perfect.

are you sure you looked up the right thing, the transfer case is the cheapest part to replace, those can be had used for as little as $250, although a fairly typical used price is $500-600
rebuilts are around $1500, that's less then 1/2 the cost of a trans rebuild

the only thing I ever noticed that wasn't clear was the interior trim color, I entered a literal crap ton of vin's into that thing. so much that it put me in robot mode for a extended period of time

Not trying to be a smarta$$, but did your tranny guy explain how putting the vehicle in 4WD reduce the load on the transmission? The transmission is still transferring the same torque to the input shaft of the transfer case whether the transfer case is driving just the rear or the front and rear axles.
