What does this "barbell" do?

goes in the rear of the block and diverts oil down into the filter housing/pan
then when the return path, it routes up the back of the block to lube the engine.

Serves two purposes,
Prevents unfiltered oil from passing to the engine parts
and keeps oil from escaping from the rear of the block.

Guess this has to do with the block design and the way the oil passages run in the block.

Even though I've had my 2001 since 2006 and that 5.3l has 240k miles on it, I've never heard of this thing, but then again, I'm only really familiar with older 350 blocks and Ford 302/351 blocks.

Don’t feel bad. I never heard of it either until I had already installed my new trans for the second (or third) time and had replaced the rear main while it was accessible. Then of course I start hearing about replacing the barbell when you have the trans out. Mine has 170k and no issues. Fingers crossed. I never wanna do the trans again.

Chasing pending P0171 and P0174 code. Service stabilitrac pops up when I stop at stop lights, immediately goes away as soon as I start moving again. At my Gf for the weekend so my Tech2 is at my apartment. My autocal shows 29% ltft maybe 6-8% stft… haven’t even popped the hood to look around yet… temps just dropped into the 50-60s lately so I’m hoping it’s a vacuum leak or something loose/dirty maf…

The verdict is in. I like them. i can tell a difference between these and the ones they replaced. First pic is headlights only, second is fogs only. third is both together. 20211218_023747.jpg20211218_023800.jpg20211218_023808.jpg

I have two air ratchets like that plus my Milwaukee M12’s (1/4 & 3/8 speed ratchet). The one he was using in that video had the power of a standard 1/2” air impact minus the “nose”.

Here are the main ones i use.
I believe i have a few more, but put away since these ones are my go-to

That Aircat on the left does 130ft lbs!
It's a knuckle buster, I have had my hand pined by it a few times. :jester:
It's slow but has a ton of power.
Close to "impact" but it won't hammer.
you can do it manually, but it transfers all of that into the hand. :emotions33:
(I love aircat's stuff)

The one next to it is branded "acdelco".
it's a very nice ratchet, iirc i got it for about $20 on an amazon clearance.
I loved it so much i got a spare while they were cheap and available.

then the new one, next to that, astro 3/8 with a built-in socket swivel.
Used it for the first time today.
It's nice, but that ac delco has a longer nose and no external moving parts, so it will stay as my go-to.
I'm also dumping that swivel air fitting on the end, it's stupid.

Then the 1/4in
it looks identical to the astro version, and at the time it was about half the price.
Its good, i use it often.
But it does get a little hot with heavy use.

As you can see from the above image, i got the bearing cap pulled.
I caught this one much sooner.
the thrust bearing was out of spec but not totaled.

the wear in the bearing is also nicely polished.
I'm going with i need to loosen up the clearances a little.

And i'm on the fence if i want to try the crank once more or call it and yank the engine.

While working this, my new diamond d holster came in the mail for the 'ol 500.
So, i got to model that for my wife, currently doing a little breaking in of the leather...
Wife said what every man wants to hear: It's huuuge!

sipping some whiskey right now, trying to decide if i want to say fk it and yank the engine like i know i should.
Or give it one more go.

Nice thing, non "race" bearings are cheap.
$60 and i have mains and rod bearings...

more sipping to think about it.
:hmmm2:

I suggest not thinking about your engine while “sipping” whiskey. At least don’t make decisions while doing so. I never made a single sound decision while under the influence and now that I’ve quit drinking I haven’t made a single boneheaded one. And that’s been 15 years. Might be part of the reason you’re struggling with this engine. I have never heard of anyone having so much trouble building an LS. Of course, that’s just an opinion of some guy on the internet lol.:2cents:

What are you talking about? I made the best decisions when I was drinking. That's how I ended up with 90% of the shiny parts and tools I have! :anitoof:

I had my long tubes ceramic coated, high heat, and have long extensions, just not sure where to put em, just yet. Im rewiring electrical this weekend
Gotcha. Having a 6.2l limits the space that I’m able to work with, and pretty much eliminates the idea of long tubes for mine. We will be eager to see your work once you get finished.

By the way…the wifey and my uncle both said hello and have recently been seen rockin’ their “Team USA” shirts.

That ACDelco is a nice addition to the tool box. Looks like you stole two of them for that price while the getting was still good.
The swivels are nice for some air tools, but usually with ratchets I opt for a 45 or 90.

Yeah i sense he was not the "happy drinkers" that u and i are. ;)

And i second that, some of my favorite tools and toys were ordered after i had a few.

I also use it as a form of meditation.
Ponder lifes great questions.
well made decisions like what color shingles to match the blue sidings etc.

I'm still very pleased with my decision, and several neighbors followed my color choice since then.

Lol
