About a month ago I was driving my Yukon Denali when all of a sudden it started to tick very loud and whenever i would give it gas it felt like it was bogging out or about to run out of gas. I knew it had to be the lifter. I sent it to the shop and it was a collapsed lifter. I had all lifters replaced as well as the camshaft. I have been driving it for no more than a week when all of a sudden the same thing happens again... loud ticking and loss of power. thankfully i have a 2-year warranty. my question is. Does anyone have an idea as to why it has a collapsed lifter after i just had the whole top end rebuilt?

Did they replace the VLOM and the little filter under the oil pressure sensor. The VLOM solenoids depend on clean oil to function properly, to send oil to the AFM lifters to collapse them for V4 mode operation.

Did the shop replace ALL of the lifters? Even regular lifters fail, especially if the nylon guides were not replaced with new ones and they crack allowing the lifters to rotate which wipes out the camshaft lobe.

Lifter Guides - 12669184 and 12669185 - 2 each
Improved Rocker Cover, Driver's Side - 12642655
Lifter, De-Ac Improved - 12645725 - 8
Lifter, Standard - 12648846 - 8
Manifold VLOM, Improved - 12571609 - 1

Check your receipt for these parts; there are a whole lot more but these pertain to AFM system.

Also, can you provide the part number and brand of camshaft that they used? Any talk of an AFM delete and computer reprogramming?

Well, you want to know the brand name and part numbers of the stuff they used to repair the engine. Replacing the VLOM when there is AFM failure is SOP, especially since there's a more reliable update, same for the valve cover. Now if they did not replace the VLOM, what are the chances that they did not replace the filter under the oil pressure sensor? That part being clean is critical and just $6. They could have cleaned it in the parts washer and put it back too though.

Since they also replaced the oil pump, make sure they used the right one, telling you it's a "high volume" is not sufficient. You have an all aluminum engine, the pump is supposed to be the 12612289 aka the Melling M365.

The main reason the lifters collapse is because of VLOM failure. It doesn't have to completely stop working, just get clogged up and or slow down the activation of the solenoids and they'll quickly take out the lifters.

I would insist on GM parts, especially those De-Ac lifters. Verify that the camshaft used is an AFM/VVT camshaft and not some Chicom garbage or a Melling replacement for a non AFM motor.

Consider using this opportunity to delete AFM physically from the engine, you can use the camshaft from the L9H.

Alright, the shop just got back to me and told me they believe it is the Lifter manifold....

Bi-Directional scan tools have the tests on board to check this stuff out. It just takes a few minutes. If you like this truck Zack, get a Tech-2 so you can properly diagnose these and simpler things yourself. Then you can decide whether or not to fix it yourself or have someone else do it. At least you'll know and not fall into the hands of the ignorant and lazy.

they said they did test it and the test were good which is weird why they are saying it is bad now. what is a tech-2 how much do they run?
