Hey all, I've been lurking a while and figured I'd finally share.

28 years old, married 7 years, father of 4 (just had twins in December) minimal vehicle maintenance or repair experience.

2011 SSV used by border patrol up on WA purchased back in April.

A few of my experiences so far

Horn didn't work, after reading forums I assumed it was the wiring and just needed to reconnect. Turns out the horns we're just broken. Got them replaced.

Brakes were completely shot. Got those replaced.

Wheel bearings and hub assembly needs replaced in the front still.

Small electrical or other issues I still have: cruise control, front washer fluid doesn't come out, a/c, inside floor gets super hot, center rear controls don't seem to work, the rear seats also appear to be heated? Or at least there are buttons for it.

Love this truck so far, just needs some TLC

Thanks!

if the abs light is on from the wheel hub then the cruise wont work till the abs light is out, washer fluid could be a broken line, have a helper press the washer button inside and then listen outside by the front left where the washer fluid tank is and see if you can hear the little pump going if so then make sure it has water in it and see if it spits out on the ground anywhere under the truck, there is 2 pumps one for the front window and one for the back window (2 different buttons inside, try both, if one pump works and the other doesn't then the pump may be bad). if the heater only blows on the floor then it could be a door actuator which is a fairly easy fix (usually).

Welcome aboard Chris!

The cruise may be out of action because of the brake switch above the pedals. 5-10 Minutes and $20. Stick with Timken for your hubs. I could be wrong but I do not think SSVs came with uplevel trims, ie heated seats and rear AC controls. Someone may have installed a higher end interior and did not hook everything up. AC blowing hot is probably a bad actuator.

You have enough gremlins to fix to easily justify buying a Tech2 and a shop manual so you can quickly and accurately diagnose these things without guessing and throwing parts at it.

Thanks for the reply! I'll have to check the pump because there is no sound. I think the floors are hot from whatever is underneath

oh ya you probably have the vinyl or rubber floor then? without insulation>? I know some of these guys take everything out and put in carpet kits which usually have some insulation underneath.

Exactly, vinyl flooring. I kind of don't want to put carpet in, it makes cleanup after the kids much easier lol

Thanks for the advice. Does the tech2 diagnose problems even if the engine light isn't on?

Oh yeah. It sees everything or just about. You can test and reset your AC actuators, see your high side and low side pressures, bleed your brakes with it, test and operate your window and door switches, check your TPMS sensors, run tests on your fuel injectors, tell you how much your transmission is slipping, and on and on. It can also program modules such as when adding features to your truck or when replacing a module like the ECM, which has to be done by a dealership can now be done at home with the Tech2.
