So I put a deposit on a 2005 before I knew about looking for the 706 casting mark. I asked my salesman to check the casting mark and sure enough the Tahoe I'm supposed to buy has the 706 heads. Would you guys roll the dice and buy it anyway or pass on it and look for anther one?

Where is that casting mark at? On the front or back land area or above spark plug holes?

I bought one not knowing about the castech heads, motor was rebuilt because of a bad head gasket, after rebuild I was losing coolant, finally had it checked and it was a bad castech head. I have researched them, some will pass the compression test, some wont while on the machine. Luckily the engine was still under warranty so he is rebuilding me a new engine with 862 heads.

Too bad have to remove valve cover to check the casting mark. I am surprised the dealer sales guy had the cover removed to check. I would never have expected that.

So I just got back from visiting 3 different dealers. The first service writer was no help at all as he hadn't heard of the issue. But he was going to check his 2006 Silverado to see if he has the 706 heads. I told him I was happy to help. ;) The second was familiar and said they haven't seen many bad heads. And most of what they have seen have been with Silverado's. The 3rd service writer used to be a mechanic and knew exactly what I was talking about. He said they have seen 6 or 7 sense the TSB came out and not all them had the 706 code. He said it's a pretty rare issue and that it wouldn't stop him from buying the Tahoe.

So does anyone know if all 706 heads are bound to fail? I can't find anything about that with Google.

The 706 can be found on the passenger side below and a little bit to the right of the oil filler tube.

They didn't remove the valve cover as the 706 cast mark is on the outside. I knew better than to ask them to remove the valve cover and send me pics of the those casting marks. :)

That's what I was asking, where is the 706 cast mark at on the outside? I found after googling it that the tech was right, not all the castech 706 heads showed the problem.

yess, if the deal and vehicle is good enough.

Its nuthing to get a set of 799's or 243's and bolt them on. bonus is you get to change out the ****** lifters for LS6 lifters at same time.

It's a nice one owner with 47k miles and the price is okay.

5 years ago I would have been all over replacing them myself but with the back issues have I now it can be tough doing the simplest of things so I'd have to find a good shop to do the work for me. I wouldn't take it to a Chevy dealer, one quoted me $4100, another was $2500 and the third one said they don't replace heads they just replace the motor. :(
