You can just hook to the backup wire in the tail light connector.

No. I used a test light. Without the vehicle running drop it into reverse and see which pins cause the light to come on. Put it back in park and check that the light goes off. Then tap into it.

I connected the backup wire at the rear view mirror as that's where my monitor is 
I modified a setup to make it all look factory, yet have a backup camera. Surprisingly the 2001 harness for the rear view mirror has a backup wire in it.
I finally got it wired through the vent. However, honestly, I think the newer Tahoes have a hole behind the brake lens. I may eventually cut a hole right behind there because makes it much easier to service if something goes wrong... Not sure yet if I'll redo it that way, however, from scratch I'd make a small hole and seal it through the body behind the brake lens.
