Does anyone know what would cause the fuel gauge to read the correct level only some of the time? The tank will be full or partially filled and the "low fuel" light will come on and then go back to the normal level intermittently. Thanks.

Don't know what truck you have, but it sounds like the sending unit going bad. It is all one module with the pump in the tank. As a first shot, though, I do think there is a ground back there somewhere you could mess with. Not sure exactly where it is, maybe someone else can chime in...

Id check the gound wire at the tank for corrosion, loose or broken first. Could also be the connection at the back of the instrument cluster too. It is possible that is the "fuel level sending unit" which is just a variable resistor (potentiometer) connected to a float via an arm. If thats it then youll have to pull the fuel pump module to get it replaced. Dropping the tank and you are sucking if thats it!
