2000 k2500 HD with 5.7 dual exhaust question

So a friend of mine has a 2000 2500 HD and has the dual pipes back to the stock dual in single out muffler. He wants dual exhaust and it would be pretty easy with that exhaust setup to just cut the stock muffler off and put on 2 mufflers of his choice. My question is his truck has 3 inches pipes on both sides all the way back to the muffler can the 5.7 handle 3 inches dual exhaust? I usually only do 2.5 when doing dual exhaust. Would it be key to buy something on the lines of a flow master 40 or would any muffler he wants work if we stay with the 3 in pipe.
