    2007 5.3 year compatibility

AND, for the record, I've installed MANY Melling parts into trucks and cars, for many years - but this is my first true failure of a Melling part. If that can be avoided in the future, it will be my last.

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

The entire timing set - chain, tensioner, cam and crank sprocket - is made by Melling. They were ALL changed at the same time. IMO It's highly unlikely the tensioner would break where it did, without the a broken chain catching it and snapping it off. Of course I could be wrong - and I...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

I have to say, I've been thinking about your timing chain. I hope you have many more miles with yours, but from what I see with mine - being the same manufacturer - I would seriously consider changing it. Thinking back on my chain replacement, I remember thinking how the GM chain seemed more...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

Measured all cylinders 3 times today. 1 has .0008 taper, 3 have .0004 taper, 2 have .0001 taper, and 2 have -.0001 taper. Having 2 being .0001 out of spec is ok with me - could have been a hair off with the measurement. However, all cylinders are at least .004 too big (over worn). They measure...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

The cylinders look perfect. Cross hatch is equally visible on all of them. No ridge, or vertical scuff marks. Rings are good, spin freely in piston. Piston skirt coating is rubbed off, but that is supposed to happen. BUT, I never go by eye. I'll measure next week, then send it to machine shop...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

Well, here is the damage, and my opinion on what happened. Chain tensioner bracket broke, causing the chain to break. Cam stopped but the crank didn't. Just one exhaust valve bent, and that valves' pushrod and rocker arm have slight grind marks (where the rocker and pushrod meet). However, no...

My engine does not have VVT, it has AFM - 2 very different systems.

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

I can say with a high degree of certainty, that IF i did NOT change the timing chain stuff - I would still be driving my Tahoe today - with a fully functioning AFM system and 359000 miles on it.

LOL, I misspoke about the reluctor wheel - I meant the cam sprocket (thought of it as a reluctor wheel - you can feel it through the cam sensor hole. No, crank did not break. My oil pressure issue went like this. First, I my dash gauge went to zero, and all kinds of warnings went off - but the...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

Have not pulled heads yet. But if you look close, the cam stopped turning just after tdc on #1 - so, it will be interesting to see what maybe (or may not be) bent. I replaced the OE tensioner and chain just because I was in there - cus I replaced the oil pump chasing an oil pressure issue...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

First, THANKYOU ALL for the wealth of information I gained on this thread. I am not familiar with the LS Engine - or all the computer stuff, but an engine is an engine. Having rebuilt several Northstar Cadillac engines, as well as racing stuff - I'll figure it out eventually. Well, here is...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

Thanks for that info. I rebuilt the transmission, installed 'the beast' sunshell, along with a corvette servo, upgraded frictions, upgraded pistons (blue seals), new thrust bearings, sonnax reinforced input drum, upgraded boost valve, a transgo kit (orange box) - and probably a few other things...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

Years ago I blocked off the oil pressure relief in the oil pan, because the spring in it was failing. That increased the oil pressure and gave a more consistant pressure. The afm worked up until this issue. So, pretty sure this - along with 3000 oil and filter changes - contributed to the...

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

Wow, thanks a lot for this info! By saying "existing bcm", you mean the engine computer - right? Just so I'm straight - my existing (5.3 lmg) engine computer can be used with an 08+ 6.0 motor? If so, does my existing computer have to also be tuned for the different injectors used in the 6.0?

I am not sure, yet, if the engine is not rebuildable. Just want to be prepared for that. I too, am curious as to what happened, and I will certainly learn the answer as I tear it down. The crank turns - but the cam does not. I will post the answer to these questions as soon as I can.

    2007 5.3 year compatibility

Im pretty sure my 2007 Tahoe LMG, vin0, engine cam broke (or cam chain broke?). Just shut off on highway, threw a code P0340. Removed cam sensor, stuck my finger in, rotated the engine by hand, and couldn't feel or see the reluctor wheel spinning. Verified by looking down the oil fill, rocker...

Most miles with stock AFM system?

I have 365225 miles on my 07 Tahoe. AFM has always worked as it should. I did have a failed oil pressure relief valve spring - located in the oil pan. (this valve is commonly over looked or not known about, when oil pressure issues arise). I blocked that off at around 150000, and it has been...

Normal oil pressure or am I just over reacting.

No. And the non-dod engines have a different oil pump.

Normal oil pressure or am I just over reacting.

This sounds like a tell tail sign of a weak oil pressure relief valve spring (not the one in the pump - it is the one in the pan). It is THEE most missed and overlooked problem when it comes to oil pressure issues on these engines. In time your pressure may go down to zero or close to it and the...

    Bad News from Blackstone

By having the sense to submit oil for sampling, your engine loves you. That is a great thing to do - BUT the results may give you more worry than necessary. ALL engines wear out eventually. The fact that oil sample results are seemingly not good - may or may not mean anything...Meaning, street...

    Oil Pressure

Sorry about the late reply. YES - your issue IS the pressure relief valve IN the pan. There are 2 ways to fix it. You can remove it and install a plug. OR replace it. Either way the pan has to be dropped. Not as hard as it looks. Also, it is not the oil pump OR the O-ring. BUT when you have...
