I'm having this problem on my 06 right now. I have a constant "static" anytime the head unit is on and volume is anything other than absolute zero. The volume knob does not affect the level of the static sound, but does still adjust the music.
Also, even if the radio is off, it makes the noise...

I love that you are looking for improved longevity on a truck with 267k miles! The GMT800 platform just can't be beat in this department.
The "vacuum leak" you hear may very well be broken bolts on the exhaust manifolds.
Did you get any maintenence history on the vehicle?
The long terms are simply a function of the short terms. Think of the short terms as what your truck is doing as an immediate response the the data, and the long terms as a large scale compensation. Watch the short terms at idle. What do they do when you hit the gas?
