Ok, this is turns out to be as simple as the placement of the charging dock is too far back. If you place the phone, just over the back lip of the pad, you'll notice that it recognizes the phone (charging icon on the car display), but then it goes away as it doesn't have a close enough connection. I took the bottom of the center console lid and removed the charge plate, put the S7 edge on it and bingo, charges perfectly. GM just needs to change the placement to have it come forward by less than an inch. It would be easy enough to do this yourself if you were adventurous, it would require grinding down a bit of plastic and then glueing it in place. The other potential option would be to spin the rubber mat 180 degrees. It's held in place by a handful of screws from the bottom of the console. (By the way, the bottom of the console pops off easily with pry tool, just like a dash cover plate would.) You'd need cut off the little nub on the rubber pad that helps keep it in place, then bolt everything back and it should give you enough room in the back to get a good connection (I didn't try this, but it might be worth investigating as an option) I'm going to stick with USB fast charging via cig lighter adapter from Anker....kind of a bummer not to have the option to use wireless charging though.
