Good Evening!

Took a long weekend up in the Adirondacks this past weekend. The 350 mile drive each way was mostly uneventful, with the exception of a few "minor" issues. On the way there, I began to notice a noise that I suspect is a wheel bearing going bad. Noise seemed to come and go for the rest of the way. On the return trip, the noise was still present and after about 150 miles the ABS, Stabilizer, and Traction control systems went out.

Does this suggest that there is more than just a wheel bearing? Looking for advice before I dive in!

If it matters, the truck has about 115,000 on it and to the best of my knowledge (2nd owner) the wheel bearing have never been replaced.

Thanks,
Doug

Put a floor jack under the lower control arm and lift the tire off the ground. Then see if you can wobble it. It's possible the bearing(s) could be bad. If they are bad enough, you could get the ABS sensor so that it's out of range with the tone ring. That, or you could have broken/ground the tone ring out, or ground the tip of the sensor off. I would have expected some brake pad knock back, but am not that familiar with how these vehicles behave with bad wheel bearings.

Thanks crashtestdummy! The bearing was bad. Haven't had the ABS light on since I put the new one in Tuesday evening. I was surprised at how far gone it was - didn't have much indication that it was so bad.

Glad to know that did it. I would have expected brake issues if it were that bad, but who knows? So far, I haven't experienced any wheel bearing issues with any of our newer cars with the replaceable hubs, but I'm sure that day will come.
