Have a 96 2 door tahoe 4x4. ABS light is on.. hooked a Innova reader that does ABS as well. Scanner wont find the ABS.. keeps saying check the DLC and re-scan. everything else reads fine. took it to an independent mechanic.. hooked up his computer system.. wont read ABS

Does this mean the ABS unit itself is toast if readers and scanners are not able to talk to the ABS system?

need a direction to go in before i start throwing parts at it..

I can't answer the scanner question but I can say that the common cause on these trucks is one of the speed sensors on a front wheel

Has the abs light been on since you have owned it or a recent issue? Besides having a shop try thier scanner has it been at the shop previously since the light has been on? The only reason i ask is a simple fuse is easy to forget and overlook. Once abs light is on alot of people and some shops (maybe they forgot to mention it) pull the fuse for the abs module. If thier is an abs fault it can cause some pretty hairy braking conditions so the fuse ends up getting pulled until repairs are done. That or maybe the fuse is just blown. That's a possible for the scanner issue as for the original cause for the light x2 on bowtiefreaks comment.

Before condemning the ABS module can you find someone with a Tech 1 or 2? The Tech 1A has 3 different programs : Power train, Chassis, & Body. If I remember correctly Chassis is used for ABS, and Body is used for EVO power steering and Airbag. If the factory scanner can't find it then yes, either a power issue or the ABS is toast

thank you everyone for the help... i bought the truck about a month ago knowing that the ABS light was on.. could never get it to go off.. so i unplugged and replugged the sensors back in... and the ABS light is now off completely.. must have been some crap in the sensor weather packs or they just were not seated in correctly..

Did you ever figure out the issue with the scanner?
