I'm getting the lean code but my dash light is not lit up. Is this normal?

Don't know. The the transmission shop I went to told me about it. Guess I should check with my scanner and clear it to see if it comes back.

Turn key to on position w/o starting and if check light comes on then its good and prob just means its a history code

You are getting what status on the lean code? Current? Pending? History?
Does your check engine light come on momentarily when you turn the key to position 2 (ign position where the dash lights up)? If so the bulb itself is good.

When I turn the key on without starting the car the battery light comes up in the little screen, is the check engine light separate from that screen?
Edit: From what slchoe said, I'm assuming the check engine light is a standalone bulb. I will keep that in mind the next time I start it and will check.

No check engine light came on with ignition on and car not started.

Sounds like bad bulb then, I think those are soldered to the board though
