On my '07 Yukon XL Denali, last week the switch on the tailgate stopped working?

The tailgate works fine from the switch in the front overhead and from the remote, but the switch on the tailgate does not work?

Is there any difference between that switch electrically (i.e. sensors or wiring?) than from the overhead switch up front or from the remote?

Or do I just have a bad tailgate switch?

Does the tailgate switch just come out or do you have to take the whole tailgate cover off to get the switch out?

Bruce, there was a recent post about someone making a similar repair on here recently. I forget the details of it though.

Searched, did not find any posts about the switch, several about the tailgate opening partially, mostly about replacing the gas shocks, which I don't think is my problem?

Well, now I am wondering?

The tailgate is doing weird things....

When I was at the store yesterday, I used the remote to open it, went up about 1/4 of the way then closed, would not open power, had to open it manually, then after I had it open for a few minutes, power closed by itself while I was loading.

Later after I opened it power from the switch inside, I unloaded my stuff, closed it manually, came back a few minutes later and it was open.

Do I have a possessed tailgate? :)

I would suspect it is a malfunctioning handle switch but I would also check the wire harness where it enters the body at the top of the gate... they are known to get chaffed wires where they rub on the sharp metal that it passes through in the roof... causes all kinds of issues.

There are a few threads about it on here.. most just find the offending wires and reconnect or tape up as needed then put some split hose over the sharp metal edge and all is well.

I'm not familiar with these as mine does not have it. However, I do know that there are sensors associated with it and if one is malfunctioning could possibly cause the issues you are experiencing. I think Wes has experience with this: @Doubeleive

no sensors on the nnbs other than if it detects it bumped into something (resistance) then it stops and closes which is why if it was not opening more than a inch or two or only part way that it could be the gas shocks, I don't know a whole lot about them but I would check the harness for cut wires as mentioned above the suspect spot is where the harness comes out of the body at the top at the rubber boot that you can access while the hatch is open. I would switch it to manual mode while inspecting so it doesn't try and close on your head.

I used the door grip switch to open and close it, now everything seems to be working fine.

I looked at the wiring between the tailgate and the body, looked fine, but did not pull it all apart?

I wonder if there was something stuck at the door grip switch?
